Thank you Jeff Armer.. You know I tried pinning the knocking sound using a stethescope and its not coming from top or bottom of engine itself. Its louder by the power steering pump. And even so as car runs at idle, it suddenly wants to force turn off and it actually does if it ain't given a little accelerating. Still think it's what you mentioned or is there any hope of it being something else?

SOURCE: 2004 chevy cavalier makes a ''knocking'' sound

This could be any number of things. It could be your CV axle going bad, your tie rod joint has gone bad, your lower ball joint has gone bad. More than likely it will be your CV axle. What you need to look for is rips on any of the boots for these parts. The one that has the rip will more than likely be your problem. Just check for grease coming out of any of these parts and you will find your culprit because it has dried up and is causing the knocking sound. Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks for using FixYa!

SOURCE: crankshaft position sensor location

1990 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2L TBI 4cyl
The Crankshaft Position Sensor is located under hood, center, rear engine area, below ingnition coil pack and DIS module, mounted in engine block.

Fig. 1: View of the CKP sensor-to-crankshaft reluctor relationship

Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor
A magnetic crankshaft sensor (Hall Effect switch) is used which is remotely mounted on the opposite side of the engine from the DIS/IC module. The sensor protrudes in to the engine block, within about 0.050 in. (1.27mm) of the crankshaft reluctor.

SOURCE: 98 chevy cavalier cranks but wont start changed

try to start the car, than the anti theift would shut the car off. you wait ten min with the key on, until you see the anti theift flash or disapear. than turn key to off position and try to start it. this will reprogram the computer.. Good luck.

you can also try disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes

2001 isuzu tropper 3.5l 4x4 engine runs but loud knock changed oil and still has loud knock can i just change the oil pump or do i need to change whole engine

If you are hearing a loud "knock" and it is coming from the bottom of the engine you probably have a bad crankshaft bearing(s) which means engine rebuild or replacement.

My 01 has a bad knocking noise what does this mean?

it means that you need to research either a different car, or a different engine for this car. A loud knocking noise indicates a connecting rod is loose, and your engine has little to no time left before the rod or endcap breaks, completely messing up your engine, and making it very difficult to change. If you must drive it, drive it slow, and be super gentle with the you're driving on ice. If it's more of a ticking noise, that could be a lifter, but a loud hollow sounding knock is a rod. You may also have a check engine light showing up on the dash from the knock sensor.

Most likely it could be a vavle or it could be something with the exhast. Hope for the exhast. Replacing vavles are costly.
