I broke the radio antenna on 1984 s-10 truck while replacing heater core. do i need to completely remove dash cowl.

Check this procedure for 1993 Ford Taurus 3.0L FI 6cyl REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
(see Figures 1 and 2)

Be sure to consult the laws in your area before beginning any procedure which requires servicing the air conditioning system. In some states, it is illegal to perform repairs involving refrigerant unless the work is done by a certified technician.

CAUTION When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.
When removing the instrument panel, it may be beneficial to have a friend or assistant help you.


Without Air Conditioning
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the instrument panel on 1986-89 vehicles as follows:
    1. Remove the four screws retaining the steering column opening cover, then remove the cover.
    2. Remove the sound insulator under the glove compartment by removing the two push nuts securing the insulator to the studs on the climate control case.
    3. Remove the steering column trim shrouds, then tag and disengage all electrical connections from the steering column switches.
    4. Remove the four screws at the steering column bracket to remove the steering column.
    5. Remove the screws retaining the lower left and radio finish panels, then remove the panels by snapping them out.
    6. Remove the cluster opening finish panel retaining screws. On Taurus remove the jam nut behind the headlight switch and the screw behind the clock or clock cover. Remove the finish panel by rocking the upper edge toward the driver.
    7. Disconnect the speedometer cable by reaching up under the instrument panel and pressing on the flat surface of the plastic connector. The panel can be removed with the cluster installed.
    8. Release the glove compartment assembly by depressing the side of the glove compartment bin and swinging the door/bin down.
    9. Using the steering column, cluster and glove compartment openings and by reaching under the instrument panel, tag and disengage all electrical connections, vacuum hoses, heater control cables and the radio antenna cable.
    10. Tag and disengage all underhood electrical connectors of the main wire loom. Disengage the rubber grommet from the dash panel and push the wire and connectors into the instrument panel area.
    11. Remove the right and left speaker opening covers by snapping them out.
    12. Remove the two lower instrument panel-to-cowl side retaining screws from the right and left side. Remove the instrument panel brace retaining screw from under the radio area. On Sable, remove the defroster grille by snapping it out.
    13. Remove the three instrument panel upper retaining screws, then remove the instrument panel.
  1. Remove the instrument panel on 1990-95 vehicles as follows:
    1. Position the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
    2. Disconnect the positive battery cable.
    3. Remove the ignition lock cylinder and, if equipped, remove the tilt lever.
    4. Remove the steering column trim shrouds. Tag and disengage all electrical connections from the steering column switches.
    5. Remove the four bolts and opening cover, and the two bolts and reinforcement from under the steering column.
    6. Disengage the insulator retainer and remove the insulator. Remove the four nuts and reinforcement from under the steering column.
Do not rotate the steering column shaft.
    1. Remove the four nuts retaining the steering column to the instrument panel, disconnect the shift indicator cable and lower the column on the front seat. Install the lock cylinder to make sure the steering column shaft does not turn.
    2. Remove bolt at the steering column opening attaching the instrument panel to the brace. Remove instrument panel brace retaining bolt from under the radio area.
    3. Remove the sound insulator under the glove compartment by removing the two push nuts that secure the insulator to the studs on the climate control case.
    4. Disconnect the wires of the main wire loom in the engine compartment. Disengage the rubber grommet from the dash panel, then feed the wiring through the hole in the dash panel into the passenger compartment.
    5. Remove the right and left cowl side trim panels. Disconnect the wires from the instrument panel at the right and left cowl sides.
    6. Remove screw each from the left and right side retaining the instrument panel. Pull up to unsnap the right and left speaker opening covers and remove.
    7. Release the glove compartment assembly by depressing the side of the glove compartment bin and swinging the door/bin down.
    8. Using the steering column and glove compartment openings and by reaching under the instrument panel, tag and disengage all electrical connections, vacuum hoses, heater control cables, speedometer cable and radio antenna cable.
    9. Close the glove compartment door, support the panel and remove the three screws attaching the top of the instrument panel to the cowl top and disconnect any remaining wires. Remove the panel from the vehicle.
  1. Drain the coolant from the radiator.
  2. Disconnect and plug the heater hoses at the heater core. Plug the heater core tubes.
  3. Disconnect the vacuum supply hose from the inline vacuum check valve in the engine compartment. Remove the screw holding the instrument panel shake brace to the heater case and remove the shake brace.
  4. Remove the floor register and rear floor ducts from the bottom of the heater case. Remove the three nuts attaching the heater case to the dash panel in the engine compartment.
  5. Remove the two screws attaching the brackets to the cowl top panel. Pull the heater case assembly away from the dash panel and remove from the vehicle.
  6. Remove the vacuum source line from the heater core tube seal and remove the seal from the heater core tubes.
  7. Remove the four heater core access cover attaching screws and remove the access cover from the heater case. Lift the heater core and seals from the heater case.
To install:
  1. Transfer the three foam core seals to the new heater core. Install the heater core and seals into the heater case.
  2. Position the heater case access cover on the case, then install the four retaining screws.
  3. Install the seal on the heater core tubes, then install the vacuum source line through the seal.
  4. Position the heater case assembly to the dash panel and cowl top panel at the air inlet opening. Install the two screws to attach the support brackets to the cowl top panel.
  5. Install the three nuts in the engine compartment to attach the heater case to the dash panel. Install the floor register and rear floor ducts on the bottom of the heater case.
  6. Install the instrument panel shake brace and screw to the heater case.
  7. Install the instrument panel by reversing the removal procedure.
  8. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core. Connect the black vacuum supply hose to the vacuum check valve in the engine compartment.
  9. Fill the radiator and bleed the cooling system.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable and check the system for proper operation.

How do i fix the heater core on my ford taurus 1995


Hi there,

Remove heater/evaporator case. Remove vacuum source line from heater core tube seal. Remove seal from heater core tubes.
Remove heater core access cover screws. Remove access cover and seal from heater/evaporator case. Lift heater core and case seals out of heater/evaporator case.
Installation
If installing new heater core, transfer case seals to new core. Install heater core and seals into heater/evaporator case. Install heater core access cover on case. Install seal on heater core tubes. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Evacuate and charge A/C system. Refill cooling system.

HEATER/EVAPORATOR CASE
Removal
  • Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain coolant from radiator. Gently pull instrument panel away from right side of dash panel.
  • Discharge A/C system using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Disconnect heater hoses from heater core. Plug heater core tubes or drain coolant by blowing coolant from heater core using low pressure compressed air. Disconnect vacuum supply hose from inside engine compartment.
  • Disconnect A/C lines from evaporator core. Plug A/C lines and evaporator core tubes. Remove instrument panel assembly brace to evaporator case bracket screw. Remove assembly brace.
  • Remove floor register and rear floor duct from bottom of heater/evaporator case. Remove nuts securing heater/evaporator case to firewall. Remove 2 screws securing support brackets to cowl top panel. Carefully pull heater/evaporator case away from firewall. Remove heater/evaporator case.
  • To install, reverse removal procedure. Evacuate and charge A/C system. Refill cooling system.
INSTRUMENT PANEL
Removal & Installation
  • Position front wheels in straight-ahead position. Disable air bag system. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article in ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT section. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering column trim shrouds.
  • Disconnect all electrical connections from steering column switches. Remove cover from under steering column. Remove 4 bolts and reinforcement from under steering column. Disconnect parking brake release control motor from parking brake and ignition switch connector.
  • Disengage insulator retainer. Remove insulator. Remove 4 nuts and reinforcement below steering column. Remove 4 nuts securing steering column to instrument panel and lower column to front seat. Disconnect PRNDL cable (A/T models).
  • Ensure ignition switch is locked to prevent steering column from turning. Remove 4 instrument cluster retaining screws. Disconnect speed control cable and vehicle speed sensor (if equipped). Disconnect electrical connectors and remove instrument cluster. At steering column opening, remove one bolt securing instrument panel to brace. Remove one instrument panel brace bolt (below radio area).
  • Remove sound insulator under glove box by removing 2 push nuts securing insulator to studs on climate control case. Remove glove box door and compartment. Remove air cleaner housing, battery and battery tray. Disconnect wires of main wire loom in engine compartment. Disengage rubber grommet from firewall. Feed wiring into passenger compartment through hole in firewall.
  • Remove right and left kick panels. Disconnect wires from instrument panel at right and left kick panel sides. Remove screws on left and right sides of instrument panel.
  • Pull up to unsnap right and left speaker opening covers. Remove speaker covers. Working through steering column and glove box openings, reach under instrument panel and disconnect electrical connectors, vacuum hoses, A/C-heater control panel cables, and radio antenna cable.
  • Support instrument panel. Remove 3 screws attaching top of instrument panel to cowl top. Disconnect remaining wires. Remove instrument panel. To install instrument panel, reverse removal procedure.

Need to replace heater core for Ford Taurus 2000


Heater and Evaporator Core Housing Removal & Installation To Remove:
  1. Recover the refrigerant.
  2. Remove the instrument panel.
  3. Remove the right side cowl vent screen.
  4. Remove the screws and the water shield.
  5. Disconnect the vacuum supply hose.
  6. Clamp off and disconnect the heater hoses at the firewall.
  7. Disconnect the evaporator outlet spring lock coupling. Discard the O-rings.
  8. Remove the two condenser-to-evaporator line bracket bolts.
  9. Disconnect the evaporator inlet spring lock coupling. Discard the O-rings.
  10. Remove the three nuts at the dash panel.
  11. Remove the screws and the heater outlet floor duct.
  12. Remove the evaporator core housing bolt and nut.
  13. Remove the heater and evaporator core housing.

To Install:
  1. Install the heater and evaporator core housing in the vehicle. Secure the mounting nut and bolt.
  2. Install the heater outlet floor duct. Secure with the mounting screws.
  3. Install the three mounting nuts to the dash panel. Tighten to 53 in-lb (6 Nm).
  4. Install new refrigerant system O-ring seals lubricated in clean mineral oil. Connect the evaporator lines.
  5. Install the two condenser-to-evaporator line bracket bolts. Tighten to 80 in-lb (9 Nm).
  6. Connect the hoses to the heater core connections. Lubricate the coolant hoses with plain water only, if needed.
  7. Connect the vacuum supply hose.
  8. Install the screws and the water shield.
  9. Install the right side cowl vent screen.
  10. Install the instrument panel.
  11. Lubricate the refrigerant system with the correct amount of clean PAG oil.
  12. Evacuate, leak test and charge the A/C system.
  13. Add coolant as needed.

Removal & Installation
  1. Disconnect and remove the negative battery.
    CAUTION After disconnecting the negative battery cable, wait 2 minutes for the driver-s/passenger-s air bag system capacitor to discharge before attempting to do any work around the steering column or instrument.
  2. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
  3. Remove the instrument panel by performing the following procedure:
    1. Turn the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.
    2. Remove the knee blocker from the instrument panel.
    3. Remove the steering column; do not remove the air bag module, the steering wheel or switches from the steering column.
    4. From under the driver-s side of the instrument panel, disconnect the following items:

      Instrument panel wiring harness connector from the 100-way wiring harness connector at the left side of the inner panel. Side window demister hose at the heater/air conditioning housing demister/defroster duct on the driver-s side.
    5. Remove the glove box.
    6. Reaching through the glove box opening, disconnect the following items:

      Two halves of the heater/air conditioning system vacuum harness connector. Instrument panel wiring harness connector from the heater/air conditioning system wiring harness connector. Instrument panel wiring harness connector from the passenger-s side air bag module wiring harness connector. Side window demister hose at the heater/air conditioning housing demister/defroster duct (passenger-s side). Two halves of the radio antenna coaxial cable connector. Two instrument panel wiring harness connectors from the passenger air bag ON/OFF switch wiring harness connector. Passenger-s side air bag ON/OFF switch wiring harness from the retainer clip on the plenum bracket that supports the heater/air conditioning housing just inboard of the fuse block module. Two lower passenger-s side air bag module bracket-to-dash panel nuts.
    7. Remove the upper cover from the instrument panel.
    8. Remove the 3 instrument panel-to-door hinge pillar screws.
    9. Remove the 4 upper instrument panel-to-dash nuts.
    10. Using an assistant, remove the instrument panel from the vehicle.
  4. If equipped with air conditioning, discharge and recover the air conditioning system refrigerant.
  5. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the evaporator. Plug the refrigerant openings to prevent evaporation.
  6. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core tubes.
  7. Disconnect the heater/air conditioning system vacuum supply line connector from the T-fitting near the heater core tubes.
  8. In the engine compartment, remove the 5 heater/air conditioning housing-to-chassis nuts. If necessary, loosen the battery hold-downs and reposition the battery for access.
  9. Remove the cowl plenum drain tube from the heater/air conditioning housing stud; it-s located behind the cylinder head on the cowl.
  10. From the bottom of the heater/air conditioning housing, remove the floor duct.
  11. On the passenger side, remove the heater/air conditioning housing-to-plenum bracket screw.
  12. Pull the heater/air conditioning housing down far enough to clear the defrost/demist and fresh air ducts, then, rearward far enough to clear the mounting studs and the evaporator drain tube to clear the dash panel holes.
  13. Remove the heater/air conditioning housing assembly from the vehicle.
  14. Remove the heater/air conditioning housing upper case.
  15. Lift the heater core from the lower half of the heater/air conditioning housing.
To install:
  1. Assemble the heater core into the lower half of the heater/air conditioning housing.
  2. Install the heater/air conditioning housing upper case.
  3. Install the heater/air conditioning housing assembly to the vehicle.
  4. On the passenger-s side, install the heater/air conditioning housing-to-plenum bracket screw.
  5. At the bottom of the heater/air conditioning housing, install the floor duct.
  6. Install the cowl plenum drain tube to the heater/air conditioning housing stud; it-s located behind the cylinder head on the cowl.
  7. In the engine compartment, install the 5 heater/air conditioning housing-to-chassis nuts.
  8. Connect the heater/air conditioning system vacuum supply line connector to the T-fitting near the heater core tubes.
  9. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core tubes.
  10. Connect the refrigerant lines to the evaporator.
  11. If equipped with air conditioning, evacuate and charge the air conditioning system refrigerant.
  12. Install the instrument panel by performing the following procedure:
    1. Using an assistant, install the instrument panel to the vehicle.
    2. Install the 4 upper instrument panel-to-dash nuts.
    3. Install the 3 instrument panel-to-door hinge pillar screws.
    4. Install the upper cover to the instrument panel.
    5. Reaching through the glove box opening, connect the following items.

      Two lower passenger-s side air bag module bracket-to-dash panel nuts. Passenger-s side air bag ON/OFF switch wiring harness to the retainer clip on the plenum bracket that supports the heater/air conditioning housing just inboard of the fuse block module. Two instrument panel wiring harness connectors to the passenger air bag ON/OFF switch wiring harness connector. Two halves of the radio antenna coaxial cable connector. Side window demister hose at the heater/air conditioning housing demister/defroster duct (passenger-s side). Instrument panel wiring harness connector to the passenger-s side air bag module wiring harness connector. Instrument panel wiring harness connector to the heater/air conditioning system wiring harness connector. Two halves of the heater/air conditioning system vacuum harness connector.
    6. Install the glove box.
    7. Under the driver-s side of the instrument panel, connect the following items:

      Side window demister hose at the heater/air conditioning housing demister/defroster duct on the driver-s side. Instrument panel wiring harness connector to the 100-way wiring harness connector at the left side of the inner panel.
    8. Install the steering column.
    9. Install the knee blocker to the instrument panel.

  13. Connect and remove the negative battery.
  14. Refill the cooling system.
  15. Run the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.

Heater Core - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
1994-97 Vehicles

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and properly drain the engine cooling system to a level below the heater core.
  2. Disconnect the heater hoses from the core tubes near the cowl.
The instrument panel carrier is designed not only to provide access to parts through removal of the carrier components, but the carrier will also tilt downward as a complete assembly to allow access from the top. If this is desired, remove the retainer screws along the top and bottom of the carrier assembly (refer to the figure). The instrument panel will then tilt as an assembly into the cab. It is necessary to unbolt and lower the steering column from the carrier to allow for maximum movement of the instrument panel.
  1. The instrument panel must be removed or repositioned for access to the heater core case. Unbolt and either tilt the instrument panel forward or disengage the instrument panel components and remove the panel from the vehicle. In most cases, tilting the panel forward should be sufficient for the necessary access.
  2. Unfasten the heater core rear case retaining screws, then remove the rear case for access to the heater core.
  3. Loosen the retainers and remove the heater core retaining straps.
  4. Remove the heater core and seals.
To install:
  1. Install the heater core and seals, taking care not to damage the core tubes when inserting them through the cowl.
  2. Install and secure the core retaining straps.
  3. Install the rear case and secure using the screws.
  4. Reposition and secure the instrument panel and components. Tighten the cowl screws to 17 inch lbs. (1.9 Nm) and the lower instrument panel screws to 66 inch lbs. (7.5 Nm).
  5. Connect the heater hoses to the core tubes.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable, then properly refill the engine cooling system.
  7. Run the engine at normal operating temperature, then check for leaks.

  1. Remove heater outlet floor duct (18C433) as described.
  1. Remove instrument panel (04320). Refer to Section 01-12 .
Instrument Panel SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL(S) REQUIRED Description Tool Number Radio Removing Tool 415-001 (T87P-19061-A)
Removal and Installation
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301).
  1. Remove RF wheel and tire assembly. Refer to Section 04-04 .
  1. Remove three nuts in radiator coolant recovery reservoir area.
  1. Remove bolt retaining front fender apron (16054) to front fender (16005) .
  1. Position front fender splash shield out of the way.
  1. Lower vehicle.
  1. Tag and remove main harness connector from jumper harness (located in front of blower motor).
  1. Remove steering column. Refer to Section 11-04 .
  1. Remove RH cowl side trim panel (02344) and LH cowl side trim panels (02345) .
  1. Tag and disconnect wiring connectors in LH and RH cowls.
  1. Remove ground wire located on LH cowl side.
  1. Remove RH instrument panel upper moulding (04268) and LHinstrument panel moulding (04389) from instrument panel (04320) by pulling away from instrument panel and snapping out of retainers. Disconnect wiring connectors as required.
  1. Remove glove compartment (06010).
  1. Remove instrument panel upper finish panel (044A90) and disconnect the A/C sunload sensor (19E663) and anti-theft indicator, if equipped.
  1. Disconnect the heater water hoses (18472) from the heater core tubes. Plug the ends of the heater water hoses to prevent coolant loss.
  1. Plug heater core tubes securely to prevent coolant leakage from heater core (18476).
  1. Remove one nut retaining the upper LH corner of the A/C evaporator core housing (19A559) to the dash panel (01610) .
  1. Disconnect two vacuum supply hoses from vacuum source. Push grommet and vacuum supply hose into passenger compartment.
  1. Disconnect wiring harness from A/C electronic blend door actuator.
  1. Disconnect the white vacuum hose from the heater and A/C air inlet duct door vacuum control motor (18A318).
  1. Remove nuts from the studs along the lower flange of the heater air plenum chamber (18471).
  1. Disconnect connectors to A/C electronic blend door actuator and electronic module on side of heater air plenum chamber.
  1. Remove heater air plenum chamber by pulling rearward.

Installation
  1. Route the vacuum supply hose through the dash panel and seat the grommet in the opening.
  1. Position the heater air plenum chamber under the instrument panel with the A/C register duct opening up and the heater core tubes down. Connect wire harness connector to A/C electronic blend door actuator and electronic module on side of heater air plenum chamber .
  1. Rotate the heater air plenum chamber up behind the instrument panel and position the heater air plenum chamber to the dash panel. Insert the heater core tubes and mounting studs through their respective holes in the dash panel and the A/C evaporator core housing.
  1. Install three nuts on the studs along the lower flange and one on the upper flange of the heater air plenum chamber.
  1. Install three nuts below the windshield wiper motor (17508) to retain the LH end of the heater air plenum chamber to the dash panel.
  1. Install one nut to retain the upper LH corner of the A/C evaporator core housing to the dash panel .
  1. Connect the white vacuum hose to the heater and A/C air inlet duct door vacuum control motor.
  1. Connect the vacuum jumper harness to the plenum harness at the multiple vacuum connector near the heater outlet floor duct. Install heater outlet floor duct.
  1. Connect the sensor tube to the evaporator case connector on EATC-equipped vehicles.
  1. Connect vacuum supply hose to vacuum supply.
  1. Unplug the heater core tubes and connect the heater water hoses to the heater core tubes.
  1. Fill the cooling system with coolant to replace coolant lost during removal of the heater air plenum chamber.
  1. Install heater outlet floor duct as described.
  1. Install instrument panel. Refer to Section 01-12 .

NOTE: If a heater core leak is suspected, the heater core must be pressure leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle. Refer to Section 12-00 .

  1. Remove the heater air plenum chamber (18471) assembly as described.
  1. Remove the heater dash gasket (18570) from the heater air plenum assembly.
  1. Remove the four retaining screws from the heater core cover (18B300) and remove the heater core cover from the heater air plenum chamber assembly.

How to remove dash for heater core removal


1981-87 Models

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  2. Discharge A/C system and disconnect refrigerant and heater lines from unit.
  3. Move shift levers away from dash.
  4. Remove right side cowl trim panel, if equipped.
  5. Remove 4 screws at base and remove glove box.
  6. Remove brace through glove box opening and remove ashtray.
  7. Remove right half of lower reinforcement (7 screws to instrument panel and 1 to cowl side of trim panel).
  8. Disconnect radio ground strap.
  9. Remove right upper air duct by removing mounting screw and pulling duct out through glove box opening.
  10. Remove instrument panel center brace and right instrument panel cluster pivot bolt.
  11. Remove instrument panel cluster, disconnect shift indicator cable and lower steering column.
  12. Remove steering column studs and radio.
  13. Remove scoop connecting heater to center distribution duct (2 screws).
  14. Remove center distribution duct by pulling bottom of dash out to gain clearance.
  15. Remove floor air distribution duct.
  16. Disconnect temperature control cable through glove box.
  17. Remove 7 retaining nuts from firewall and screw that retains assembly to cowl side sheet metal.
  18. Flex dash out and remove heater assembly.
  19. Remove nuts from door arms and remove door arms.
  20. Remove 7 screws to remove cover from housing.
  21. Remove evaporator core.
  22. Reverse procedure to install.

Heater Core


1) disconnectnegative battery cable
2) remove coolant reservoir
3) dis-connect heater hoses from heater core and plug holes in heater core, some coolant will drain out
4) remove mounting bolts and nuts on fire wall
5) remove glove box liner and door
6) lable and dis-connectheater controls
7) dis-connectand remove computer and mounting bracket
8) move radio antenna wire
9) remove kick pannel and un-bolt lower corner of dash
10) remove screws and nuts holding the housing inside the cab
11)remove the heater housing from the vehicle
12) detatch the core retaining straps and remove the heater core
13) installation is this procedure in reverse
