Know how you feel I've been there! Although your friend can't turn it dosent meen you have a good brake. so its not the reason it is jacked up that you have a brake It's stopping it but not enough when you are driving. Did you adjust them up after you changed the shoe's. If you did then they are just not bedded in.You will know this by pulling the hand brake when its moving it should slide the back wheel's. If the hand brake does'nt work properly then drive it with the handbrake pulled up until you hear the engine rev's go down. Let the handbrake off and ter the foot brake. You should have brake's. Hope this help's it works for me.

this link will take you to a forum full of people with CRV's who are having the exact same problem. It seems to be with almost every year of the CRV as well. Unfortunately Honda has no explanation or solution for this problem. I have a 2009 CRV and have not had this smell, but I have been having a ton of other problems with it. I have been incredibly dissapointed with this car, and will never get another Honda. I hope you have better luck than I, and be careful with it cause I think there are some serious problems with these CRV's. Good Luck!

check wheel bearing... and make sure that the metal shims are installed with the pads. they prevent noises

probably a dumb question, but if there is a backing plate, did you make sure it isnt bent and hitting the rotor? you never want to sand new rotors, although i dont think it would cause this concern. i would suggest lightly scuffing up the brake pads. this will eliminate any noise caused by the contact of the rotors and pads. if it goes away then you know its a problem with the pads/rotors.
scoring of only the inside rotors would make me think that possibly the caliper slides are frozen up. make sure they move quite freely on the slides. it is not uncommon for brake pads to score rotors though.
but brake noises at low speeds that dont' change when applying light brake pressure are usually some sort of metal or something contacting the rotor.
