2001 chevy malibu, replaced starter, battery and alternator. Started first try, then battery indicator came on, a few seconds later the check engine indicator came on. What do I do?

Checked codes Tried to restart, it wouldn't even turn over. this isn't the ignition nor theft device problem. relays and fuses check out.

I will, its an expensive fix, however I'll exhaust all other options before I replace the BCM. Also I was testing relays when I accidentally activated the theft system. It locked all the doors with the key in the ignition. The key was in the on position lol. So, I disconnected the battery, and now I have to buy a slim jim. This car is a nightmare!

its such a shame though the rest of the car is in excellent condition. if this is simple fix i might. Then give it to my wife for her to destroy. He is asking only $500. He bought it for $1700 and put in $2700. So I kind of figure that much money it should be almost good to go lol.

What were the codes? When it was running, How long? 2 seconds would be security, by would start back up and do the same. Older GM's would kill the starter. Gm's alternators are grounded by the PCM. Fuses are the first to check. You have an 01, so pull the fuses and relays and look. This gets rid of corrosion problems. Also, you have fusible lings on this car. I believe the are down at the starter. Easy to tell. You either have one cable from the battery or you have 5 wires going to it. The other wires all have fusible links .

Testimonial: "the code had something to do with the brakes. I reset and started over. I had it running for over 10 minutes. well fusible links, that's interesting. If it were a fuse this would explain a great deal. I have 3 wires on the starter. checked all fuses and relays. Not security problem. however this thing with the alternator is intermittent. So possible a relay is nuts, but the dash indicators occasionally go nuts too. However I will look into these fusible links."

The links are supposed to read resistance just like a wire. Since they are about 6 inches long the resistance should be 0. You can also check voltage from one side to the other. But this can be misleading. I've seen 12 volts on both sides. But when things turned on the amperage dropped. resistance. Best to check them with a volt /ohm meter. Set the meter on lowest ohms. If the link reads nothing(doesn't change), Replace it. Me, I replace any wire that reads above 5.0 ohms. I do a lot of computers.

  • Randy Ohler Dec 13, 2016

BTW. brakes/abs have nothing to do with your problem.

  • Randy Ohler Dec 13, 2016

Just a note .. fusible links look like the wires except a bit bigger and a different color. There will be shrink tubing on both sides of it.

New Battery and Alternator, won't start

Have the starter pulled and tested for functionality. The contacts may be dirty, damaged, or loose. This can be checked outside of the car.

3-yr old battery went dead in my 2002 chevy S10 pickup

Yes, it sounds like your alternator is short circuited internally. Replace alternator with high quality rebuilt unit
how does the alternater works
Alternator and Charging System A battery is needed to power the operating system of your car. Once the vehicle is running the battery is charged by the alternator which is driven by the engine. While in operation the alternator creates electricity, about 13.6 to 14.3 volts, and recharges the battery to its original state of charge. The alternator is one of the hardest working electrical components in your vehicle. When your vehicle is running the alternator is busy creating electricity to provide the engine and the car accessories with needed power. When the car is not running and your battery is severely discharged some electrical components may still operate or operate poorly. Typically, these components are designed to operate properly at 12 volts; if the system voltage is low it can cause erratic symptoms.
to check out how the alternater looks .
When jump started a severely discharged battery can cause the alternator to overload and internally fail. If this occurs replace the battery before replacing the alternator. This will help prevent a second alternator failure. Most vehicles use a multi-ribbed belt connected to the engine to rotate the armature inside the alternator. If the belt fails it should be replaced immediately. Belt tension should be taught. If it isn't, check the belt tensioner. It may need to be replaced or the incorrect size belt may have been installed. Either of these conditions can cause the vehicle to stall and not restart.

I have a 2001 Chevy Malibu that wont start. All of the lights on the dash come on and when they settle.. only the battery and the check engine light are on. It has a full tank of gas and full oil and...

When you turn the key to the start position does the starter spin the engine ? The engine cranks no start ! Or nothing happens when you the key to start position ? no crank no start ? Is the anti-theft light lit on the instrument cluster (SECURITY) ? If the starter spins the engine does spin slow or normally ? Is there spark , fuel pressure ? Testing these thing's would be the place to start if the engine spins ! Videos on youtube showing how !

2004 chevy Malibu classic will not start- engine doesn't turn over just makes a gasping sound when the key is turned. I thought it was the starter but after replacing it the problem persists. Fuel pump...

Based on the gasping sound I would think that you need to check the solenoid on the starter. Sounds like it is trying to engage the starter. Make sure one of you battery cables is loose and both are tight on the battery. If you have a tester I would also check for voltage at the battery. Hope this helps.

My 2003 chevy malibu cranks but wont start. battery is good and altenator is good

To clarify - - if the engine cranks the battery and starter are ok.
The alternator does not come into play until the engine is running.
If it cranks but won't start, you have to figure out if you are missing fuel to the injectors or spark to the plugs to proceed.
A mechanic would check that and if there are any trouble codes stored in the computer.

I have a 2005 Chevy Malibu wont stay running. Have replaced the battery and starter and had the alternator checked still wont stay running

as part of the solution i first must ask, is the check engine light on? if not, it may just be time for general maintenance (spark plugs, wires, throttle body cleaning, injector system cleaning). second, while running and running in idle, is the idle varying (continually reving up and down), rough, low or none of the above? answer back and i can help out a little more.

My chevy maLIBU ALTERNATOR BELT SPINS THEN STOP CAR WON'T GO ANYWHERE

Vehicles: Chevy (GM) Malibu 2001-2005 3.1L SFI OHV 6-cylinder

Your battery has died since the alternator is not charging it. Jumping the car works to start the engine since the Malibu is using the energy of the second car to start and turn the engine.
Its possible that your belt may not be correctly routed or tensioned.

Check your 3.1L engine accessory drive belt routing. The arrow points in the direction in which the drive belt moves.

Accessory Drive Belt Installation/Removal
GM 3.1L Engine

NOTE
Routine inspection of the belt may reveal cracks in the belt ribs. These cracks will not impair the belt performance. The belt should be replaced if the belt slip occurs if a section of the belt ribs are missing. A single serpentine drive belt is used to drive all engine accessories. All belt driven accessories are rigidly mounted with the belt tension maintained by a spring loaded tensioner. The indicator on the movable portion of the tensioner must be within the limits of the marks of the stationary portion of the tensioner. Any reading outside of these limits indicates either a defective belt or tensioner.

(1) Remove engine mount.
(2) Rotate the drive belt tensioner in a clockwise motion using a breaker bar or serpentine belt tool.
(3) Remove the drive belt.

Fig. 2.
Removal and installation of the drive belt - tool is shown installed on the tensioner. Arrow points to the power steering pump pulley.

To install:

(1) Rotate the drive belt tensioner in a clockwise motion using a breaker bar or serpentine belt tool.
(2) Install the drive belt. Connect the serpentine drive belt last to the power steering pulley.
(3) Install engine mount.
