Water pump on Vibe extreme lite

Water is back flowing through pump into freshwater tank and overflowing. Where are the check valves?

The check valve should be on the outlet of the water pump.

It is more than likely your water pump. Can you run it in park with the radiator cap off. The cap on the radiator not the overflow tank. When the temp opens the thermostat you should see flow if the pump is good no flow it is probably bad. If you don't see flow check the upper hose for temp and the lower hose. If the upper line is barely warm and the lower hose is significantly hotter, it is either water pump or thermostat, but since you replaced the thermostat I would be back to water pump. BTW you should use either a contact thermometer or an infrared to check hoses, although it was done by hand in the old days.

Have a malibu 2003 changed the coolant in the overflow cleaned the jug now we start the car and now it over haeats and the overflow jug boils why


you may have a faulty thermostat which stops the water from flowing through the engine causing it to boil which builds up extreme pressure forcing the water in the engine block back through the radiator into the overflow tank or it may be a faulty water pump which will do the same thing......hope this helps......cheers.

I replaced the water pump, thermostat, flush radiator, check heater core, but the antifreeze keeps coming back into the overflow tank and therfore over heat. what could the problem be.


Only two thing could cause this problem. The actual radiator cap needs to be replaced or the neck is not smooth. If the cap is lifting prematurely it allows water to flow into the expansion tank. The second problem would be a leaky head gasket. This could be determined if the expansion tank has a black reside inside the tank. Changing the water pump and heater core was an expensive route the didn't need to happen.

If everything is working correctly; thermostat, heater core, water pump, head gaskets, etc. Then that leaves the radiator cap, the overflow hose or the overflow tank as being the problem.

As the engine heats up the coolant expands flowing into the overflow tank. As the engine cools the coolant is drawn back into the engine from the overflow tank. but this depends on the vacuum created by the cooling liquid. the radiator cap has a "valve" that lets pressure out and vacuum in. If it fails then you may not achieve a good vacuum. The hose that connects to the over flow tank must be non leaking as well; if it leaked then coolant would not be drawn back into the engine, only air would be sucked in. And lastly the coolant has to be drawn from the bottom of the overflow tank. again we dont want to be sucking air.

Some engines require a vent screw to be opened when bleeding the air out of the engine.

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line. It's job is to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank(not the cap),this is the purge line.
With the engine idling,pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating.If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage.The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side to near the thermostat housing,the blockage may be there.

My coolant expansion tank overflows after 20 minutes of running the engine


you either have a blown head gasket or cracked head both reasons will put compression gas into coolant system since air gets hotter faster than coolant any air in system will cause very fast over heating and push coolant out. the ford 3.0 is has a record of this problem the fix is not cheap and if you do it your self or have a shop do it both heads should be done and the t stat also replacing water pump would be wise
