03 Chevy Trailblazer acting up after I changed the thermostat.

After I changed the thermostat it started to idle really low and died when I turned on the defroster. had low oil so I added a quart but forgot to put the cap back on. drove for a few miles and the check engine light started flashing. not sure if that's related. put the cap back on and it still was flashing and acting like it wanted to die even without the defroster on.

A flashing check engine light means a catayltic converter damaging misfire event is happening . Have it checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes . Did you remove any wire's while replacing the thermostat ? Put in wrong place ?

did you disconnect the battery ?

  • Jeff Armer Dec 12, 2016

Disconnecting the battery can cause strange problems in newer vehicle , never heard any with 03 chevy . It will reset adaptive memory !http://www.aa1car.com/library/battery_di...

yeah I disconnected the battery. a guy at work said maybe the throttle body is dirty and when it reset thinking that it is clean and not working properly.

  • Jeff Armer Dec 12, 2016

You could try cleaning the throttle plate .Could be the IAC - idle air control valve is dirty also. . Do you know what IAC is . Controlled by the engine computer . Videos on youtube, cleaning.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tLtbI9O...

Check to see that all the wires are connected and check the ground wires if the ground wire isn't connected that will cause a problem

What about the Idle Control Valve I know these are a common fault on Ford's, if so you should be able to get away with taking it off and cleaning with something like carb cleaner. Maybe fuel filter needs changing is that the one you meant you changed?

Your checking for codes & throwing parts at it

Your NOT diagnosing anything like the cylinder
misfires, because you don't have OBD2 System
knowledge or the proper professional tools to work
on it, or Chevy Trailblazer Powertrain experience

Best left to a repair shop

2005 chevy trailblazer, rough start, stalls, gas smell, warms up idles fast, once it warms up ok. Acts like it is going to die. Sputters. Changed air filter. Changed sparked plugs, changed oil. Did...

With temperature related problems, check your intake manifold bolts for tightness. Our intakes are plastic and have a tendency to become loose, causing vacuum leaks. When it warms up, the plastic intake will expand sealing any leaks. But when it's cold, will contract, causing leaks. Easiest to check are cylinder #5 & 6 near the fire wall.

Also, clean your throttle body, a dirty throttle body will cause idle problems, especially in TB's because we don't have a true PCV valve, so gets dirty which causes sticking of the butterfly.

2004 Chevy Trailblazer idles rough. Idles ok when started up, but after warmed up it idles really rough when stopped.

If it has not pulled any codes (idiot light). Clean your throttle body, and change your spark plugs with A/C Delcos #41-103, most other brands will cause rough idle like Autolites and Bosch. This would be a cheap way to fix this problem.

If by chance you have just recently changed the battery or had the battery unhooked. Let me know, it's an easier fix that costs virtually nothing.
