Question about Chrysler Sebring

1 Answer

My Sebring convertible has started not wanting to change gears, what could it be? Maybe the trans selinoid??

This started last weekend! It goes in reverse fine, but Drive is difficult. It goes a short way and stops, then I put in reverse and start all over again.

I dont have a Manuel for the car, where can I get one?

  • Bill Boyd Dec 11, 2016

manuals are available from parts shops or technical publication book shops
take the car to any accredited auto transmission specialist for a proper diagnosis of the problem
spare parts shops can read the fault codes for free and when you have the codes you can post a comment again with those code numbers
most codes will start around p 0700 and upwards
be wary of any advice that you need a new transmission because unless you have a bad noise problem, it is most likely an electronic fault

Truck won't shift into high gear

High gear is really just torque converter "lock up", and is controlled by a fuse, relay and solenoid in the trans. Some GOOD scan tools will read trans codes, so start there. You may have to consult a trans specialist as some of these can be replaced by removing trans pan and some require trans removal. It would have helped to tell us what you are working on.

Trans output sensor?? speed sensor maybe? Did the speedometer start working? This is where you have to start. Important feature for shifting. This is electrical and checking wires for continuity. If it always goes in gear and drives, I would look hard at replacing the solenoid package. It's on the front side of the transmission. Costs around $300. You have to remove the cooler lines, a sensor, and 3 bolts to remove it. Clean it, around/behind it first. You absolutely do NOT want any dirt getting in the holes on the transmission.

I have a 1998 sebring the transmission go in first not in second

We had a 1999 Sebring that would go up through the gears and shift fine until you stopped at a stop sign. Then it would hang in first until you turned it off then back on. Then it would shift normally until you stopped again. Turned out it was a bad speed sensor (not the one for the speedo). Speed sensor is located on the transmission and several years ago was a $20.00 part. I'm not sure if this your problem or not, just thought I'd share this with you.

Good Luck

No passing gear

My car did (past tense) the same thing. The service engine light is flashing until you let off the gas because raw fuel is being dumped into the catalytic converter. The transmission won't shift because the converter is plugged. When you push the pedal to the floor the transmission computer holds the transmission in gear. Meanwhile the engine computer is raising the rpms. It will seem like a transmission problem but it is more likely a plugged catalytic converter. I had converter changed. The engine has A LOT more power, great acceleration and the transmission shifts perfectly.

1st thing to do is test the system for codes, the problem is most likely a failed or stuck shift solenoid indside the trans, have you ever serviced the trans, sometimes a fluid and filter cahnge will cure these kinds of issues.
