Try disconnecting the negative battery cable for 3 minutes to correct this.

It could be a couple things. Take it to a shop or a place like auto zone and have them test the alternator and the battery, its free :) If they both are testing as good, the next thing would be to check the battery terminals and connections. It simply is not getting the enough charge back to the battery for one reason or another.

I have a few problems. First my van won't keep a charge. Second my van seems to not be able to go beyond second gear. Next when it was running it would die for no reason.

If it's not holding a charge you could have a bad battery or the alternator is not putting out enough voltage to keep it charged. Have your battery tested at auto zone or advanced auto. Once the battery is ruled out the next thing to do is check the alternator, this can be done with the alternator installed on the vehicle, if you have a digital multi-meter or volt meter you can check alternator out put at the battery. If your D.C voltage reading is more than 13 volts than your alternator is working. Your transmission issue is probably linked to the electrical issue since it is an electronic transmission, and requires a certain amount of voltage to operate properly.

How do you know if the alternator no longer works

The easiest way to check you alternator is to start the car up and while the motor is running, remove one of the large wires from the battery post. If the car continues to run then your alternator is ok. If the car dies, then your alternator needs replacing. If you have an auto zone near you, they will test your alternator for free without having to do this.

It is built into the Alternator as best I recall. Have the alternator tested at Auto Zone or Advance Auto and that will indicate if there is a problem.
