Question about Lincoln Town Car

2 Answers

When running the AC on my 1985 Lincoln Towncar the cold air seems mixed into the warm air, and somtimes only warm air comes out. The freon pressure is fine. With the fan on auto and AC set to the lowest temp, when going up hill or accelerating, the fan turns off and warm air seeps out. Then, 5 - 10 seconds later, the fan comes on and cooler air starts blowing again. However, it seems to me the cool air is always mixed with warm air and is therefore never that cool. This goes on over and over, with the fan cutting out and warm air coming out whenever I accelerate hard or go up hill. One other perhaps helpful note: with panel set to OFF, when going uphill, one feels a blast of hot air near the top coming from the heater at our feet. Could there be some problem with the air intake?

could be your compressor clutch failing. Or you could have air in the system. CHeck out the glass view on the pump see if there is bubbles or fog in there. A faulty receiver/dryer or condensor will also do this.

Just two quick follow up quesions:

    1) how could I tell if the compressor clutch is failing? By watching it?
    2) when you say "pump," do you mean the compressor or some other component?
    3) who could I tell if the receiver/dryer or condensor is faulty?

As you can see, I'd like to avoid replacing all these parts if possible, but determining which part is at fault. Thanks so much.

If the freon is at the correct level and your AC compressor is teh most likely candidate. Have the AC compressor checked.

Air not working. Compressor kicks on and seems to run and silver cannister underhood gets cold, but no cold air just really hot air. Does it only need refridgerant?

If the AC compressor runs it has plenty ( or at least enough ) freon, sounds more lie you have an air mix door problem, check on the inside where the door flap changes for heat to AC, if it doesn't move when switching from one to the other you have that problem.
But if the compressor comes on and cycles off fairly soon afterward you are in need of a recharge.

Sounds to me like you've got a stuck door. One of the doors in the air ducts isn't closing/opening all the way. Possibly stuck or possibly a vacuum leak or disconnected/broken vacuum hose. Only way to know is to pull the dash apart. Sucks but gotta be done.

have you had the freon level checked? Sounds like it is low on freon. My lincoln did that and it was just low on freon.
