What are the pump pressures supposed to be at the fuel rail?

Hi Arlene, Im AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair.

Arlene, every vehicle is different, but if you have a pressure of around 50 PSI and when your turn the engine off it holds pressure around 50 PSI and doesn't drop to zero then your fuel pump is not the problem. NOTE: If you have a diesel the pump pressures will be different then above. Hope this helps and please visit my auto-repair-website and tell me what kind of issue you are having with your vehicle. I have a 97 powerstroke that won't start. batteries were dead, replaced them, glow plug relay new, fuel filter, starter. truck sounds like it wants to start, i dont think its getting fuel. I recently had...

Suspect gelled fuel and possibly a weak starter or failing starter solenoid.

When you crank a Powerstroke, if you can watch the crankshaft pulley and verbally count the revolutions it's probably not turning fast enough.

A little kerosene in the fuel will help keep it from gelling (a quart or two in a full tank of fuel) as will any of the anti-gel additives. Be sure you're getting winter fuel, as summer blends gel at a much higher temperature.

I've found it to be better to buy fuel at a truck stop than at gas stations. Some of fuel you get from gas stations is of very low quality- especially those gas stations that have little cards that look like credit cards that you scan to get 'bonuses', they tend to have very poor fuel oil.

The mechanical fuel pump is mounted on the side of the head, centered between the runners of the intake manifold. The intake manifold does not require removal, but access can be tricky. A selection of socket extensions, swivels and open end wrenches can be helpful.

When car is full of fuel, there is a strong fuel odor through out the car for first 50 miles then it dissipates. odor reoccurs upon refill. is this related ot fuel system recall?

stop"topping off" if thats what you are doing. also it could very well be a broken o ring on the fuel tank at the top. has the vehicle been repaired recently? if not it should be looked at by a qualified professional. this is something that should be looked at right away you dont want to have to put a fire out. they are not fun.
