How do you know the gas cap did it ? If the check light is on their are DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes stored in the PCM - engine computer . Your 98 mustang can store hundreds of DTC'S ! You take it to a qualified repair shop and have it diagnosed .That's how you have check engine light turned off .

ES300 LEXUS CHECK ENGINE SIGN. SENSOR P0450 SHOWS IN CHECK SYSTEM

It's indicating a fault in the EVAP system; smog control system, has no effect on engine operation at all. It could be a loose or defective gas cap. If you over-fill the tank, keep clicking the nozzle after it clicks off, it can also trigger the light as well as damage parts of the system.

Check Engine Light appeared; diagnostics resulted in PO455 code

If you Googled the code, you would find you
have an Evap System Gross Leak

If the gas cap was just loose the light will go out

The evap monitor only runs every few days,so
you may have to wait & see

I think you need to smoke the system & find the
route cause,vent solenoid,pressure solenoid,etc

My check engine light came on code P0446; dashboard says "check gas cap" i took it off retightened it and check engine light still on. I noticed that the metal flap for the gas nozzle is...

The metal flap should not trigger the sensor. Once you tighten the gas cap you should clear the code and see if it comes back. Otherwise it will take a while to go away.
If it does come back even though the gas cap is tight it could be the rubber seal around the gas cap replacing that can sometimes fix this issue also.

My 98 MGM check engine light came on and II had it checked and it turned out to be the gas cap. I replaced the gas cap and all was well for about 6 weeks. then two days ago the check engine light came on...

emission problems are common, there is a evap canister underneath near the tank. also sensor built onto it. sometimes water get into there especially seeing the year they crack. its best to go to a tech who expeience with th evap system.

What makes "check engine" light come on

a code stored in the computer will tell you what system triggered the check engine light.
The most common is an o2 sensor or evap code set off by a loose or faulty gas cap.after the vehicle is started about 50 times with no fault the light will go out.You can disconnect the battery for 1 minute and reset the computer, and unless the fault is still there, the check engine light will not come back on.Before you do this make sure you have the radio code handy, disconnecting the battery will lock out the radio on most new vehicles.

Gearbox light of toyota corolla 1996 does not get on

there is a cover that pops up around the shifter.you have to put the key in the ignition setting and move it to low,not park so that the cover can be turned sideways.you will see the bulb inside.the second issue, get a scan done to see what is setting off the check engine light. before doing that, the most common is a loose gas cap,so disconnect the battery for 2 minutes.that will reset the computer.if the check engine comes on again, there is an issue,if not,the gas cap may have been loose,or a sudden change in temperature triggered an evap code....cheers
