Sounds like it may be the fuel pump relay, when it gets hot it doesn't want to work properly. However; I would also check for a vacuum leak around the intake manifold. I would also check the throttle body seal between the intake manifold and the throttle bod itself, this can cause the exact condition you've decribe. Hope this helps you get started looking in the right direction.

Will it stay running if you keep your foot on the gas? If yes it sounds like you might have a bad Idle air control motor.

One of your intake manifold gaskets went bad and it is sucking in air where it should'nt be. This problem is very common on this motor. I'm 100% sure that is what it is. But no ofense if you can't figure out how to get your radiator cap off , then this job is probably a little much for you.

I had the same problem with my van, it turned out to be the EGR valve (emissions-gasoline-regulator) valve. It cost about $65, but well worth it!!! About a 20 min. job

2005 pontac grand prix emission problem

EGR Valve needs replaced, because my gas cap light has been on forever even after replacing it and found out later it is more than likely the EGR Valve which when it screws up causes misfiring and poor performance down the road if not fixed soon enough and also leaves you with very poor gas mileage. The cost of the part ranges from $150 to $270. On the other hand it could also be Ignition Coil which costs significantly less but less likely for this to be the actual problem. Its cost is about $80 for the part.
