the tail light issue could be just bad bulbs, check them with a meter ,, also, check the sockets for power to each contact point,, normally if the brake lights and flashers are working, the tail lights should too,, as far as the dash lights have you installed an after market stereo? If so a common problem is a wrong wire got grounded,The harness from the car to the factory radio has a wire for the dash lights that shows up as ground with the light off. When the lights are on the wire is 12V+. Check to see if you connected the ground from the new stereo to this wire. The radio will work perfect but everytime you turn thr park light on the fuse will blow...and the radio will continue to work. There should be a ground wire in the harness as well, ensure you connect the ground from the new stereo to this wire. there is a 15 amp fuse that blows, check them with a meter rather than by sight

Two more possible places to look:
I have seen similar problem because of dirt and moisture accumulation in the trailer hitch wiring plug, Does your truck have a tailer hitch? I so, inspect under the wiring plug cover and clean with electric contact cleaner. Also, inspect where the plug wiring harness connect to the taillight/stop light harnesses for broken/exposed wiring that may be shorting out the fuse. This problem is usually seen only in after market installed wiring.
The second place that might have a short is in the turn signal switch on the steering column. The steering wheel and upper column would have to be disassembled to make repair. The wiring could be checked from below dash by removing the steering column wiring harness plug and checking qwirs with a ohm meter for closed short. It is a tedious task.

The adapter harness for the radio is probably not wired correctly. I'll bet you also have no tail lights. You probably wired the harness so that the illumination circuit for the factory radio is wired to the wrong terminal of the new radio, thus the problem occuring when you turned on the headlamp switch. I have seen this many times when someone is trying to wire a radio adapter harness without having access to the factory wiring harness diagrams for the vehicle...the wire colors on the adapter harnesses don't allways match the wire colors of the factory harnesses. You need to know which wire is which and wire the correct wires together regardless of what color they may be. If you wired it simply by the wire colors, it most likely is not correct.
If you are lucky, it only blew the fuse for the tail/dash lamps. It is possible that you now have some serious vehicle wiring harness damage caused by the short circuit that was created.
I would disconnect the new radio and get the car fixed first. Then you need to find out which of the wires in the factory harness is for the illumination circuit and make sure that nothing is connected to it on the adapter harness. Most aftermarket radio/stereo systems do not use this circuit at all.

Since you mentioned tail lights, license plate lights AND inside stereo lights which are not commonly wired to the same connections or fuses, it is possible, that if an after market stereo system has been installed, something that the installer wire is failing, loose, corroded, or just should not have been wired in that manner. Many times it is a bad ground connection. good luck

You seem to have a handle on the problem .A wiring diagram will not indicate the location of the aux circuits. Any non original looking wiring should be disconnected from it's connecting point ie; tail lights to aux lights are usually a short distance from original wiring. CB radios are two core non original and easily from battery or fuse box. Don't go mad on the disconnect but take a long look at whats not the original fitment. let's know how you get on and the blowing fuses thing . Good luck

Trailer harness


You buy a plug-in trailer wiring harness for this vehicle. I bought mine at NAPA. The vehicle harness plug is in the wiring stuffed behind that LR access panel wherin the car jack sits. You may have to actually remove the LR tail light assembly to discover the plug, but it's there. The wiring harness is a bit pricey, more than the usual DIY harness, but it makes for a very clean, flawless, and effortless connection.

Tail lights dont work


Oh boy, Chevy uses 3 important wires to make up their tail light harness. Brown is used for your parking lights and yellow and green are your signal and brake light wires, yellow one side, green the other. You have some seriously crossed wires. Start with tracing the lic plate lite since that works. Make sure it leads into your main parking lights and the ground wires from these tail lites aren't cut. The lic place lite will work with just power because the body of the lite is grounded with the bumper. Then make sure that there is power to the signal wires. You can do this with a test light and the signal light switched on. You don't need anyone to step on the brakes since it's the same signal, only interepted. Most importantly, Remove the tail lites and check grounds!! Good luck

Check the plug at the back of the truck for corrosion. The brown wire entering the truck plug should be the the running lights, if no juice at truck plug in, you need to trace it back to the source looking for broken, pinched, wires, or poor connections.
