Question about Cars & Trucks

OLDS 97 REGENCY - where to clean contacts and how to check the starter with out removing it in the first place, for a check under the car and starting issues.

1. I think I need to clean the startering contacts for the starting system, where do I start, how do I clean them and where do I find them at? 2. My car will not start when it seems to be rained on a bunch or a little bit. I guess it is the starter, maybe not? I have electrical power completely across the car and if ready to start, sometimes it will NOT start in the rain. And some times it will. When it wont start, I have to try a few times and wait about 15 minutes for the car to then start. Mostly when it is dry outside it starts the first time, every time. The rain seems to be the issue, what do I do? 3. Or perhaps, do I need a new starter and are they easy for a beginner to replace it for themselves? What special tools do I need to rent/buy?

If you are having problems with starting during humid weather, might want to check your spark plug wires and distributor, if you do not have electronic ignition system.

Based on the description you give, most likely it is not the starter. When you turn the key, does your engine turn over ? If yes, then you can rule out the starter. If no, then with the help of someone have them turn over the key and check for power at the starter and see if you are getting power to starter and solenoid.

The spark plugs and wires were replaced 2k miles ago

Sometimes, when the car is wet, wet from rain or slush/c*ap and melting snow coming off the road or off the car, the car will not start. Yet I get power to the lights, horn, door locks. windows, etc.... but will not start. I have to turn the key to the START position several times, on and completely off, several/many times. After, between 2 to 20 minutes, turning the car to "ON" and then "OFF", it starts the motor right up and I drive away.

Have you checked the main battery cables? Make sure you look at the ground cable (negative) and all other ground wires that are in the engine compartment. If they are all good, might be a bad ignition switch.

How do I remove flywheel dust and inspection covers on a 97 olds regency with the 3800 motor?

Keep working it around till it can be removed. I recall some where you had to bend them a bit nearly to the point of breaking them before they could be removed.

97 oldsmobile regency starter

Check fusable links in your battery cable and starter wires. Do you have power at the starter where the positive cable attaches? Your battery is good? Do you have any power anywhere else?

Car won't start

With a 12 volt test light and an assistant, check for a signal to (S) terminal on starter solenoid. If ok, check all connections at starter for clean and tight. If still no crank, replace starter. If no signal to (S) terminal, suspect ignition or neutral saftey switch.
