    Check under the bonnet and check the condition of the wire cable that connects to the throttle arm on the engine ?
    How is the cable ?
    how is the connection to the throttle arm ?
    Does it have a cruise control ?

There are many reasons why a car will not move when you step on the gas pedal and they vary from easily corrected to requiring a laborious repair. A lack of power often involves the fuel system in one way or another. It could be something as simple as an engaged emergency brake or as complicated as internal engine malfunctions.
A car that runs rough, is sluggish, or frequently stalls is dangerous. The first thing to do is ensure the emergency brake is disengaged. If the emergency brake has been eliminated as the problem, a mechanic is needed to diagnose the acceleration problem.
Common reasons for this to happen: Acceleration issues typically stem from one of the following conditions:

  • Emergency break is on or stuck: This is actually one of the most common reasons that a car will not move or seems to be experiencing poor acceleration. The brake may be on simply because the driver forgot to disengage it, or it may be stuck.
An emergency brake can become stuck if it is left on for a long period of time or if it was applied with more force than usual. In regions that use salt for de-icing, or when the emergency brake has gone without use for a long period of time, releasing the brake may require the assistance of a professional mechanic.
  • Engine management issues: Many sensors interact with the engine control module to add the correct amount of fuel based on the amount of air that is coming into the engine.
As the engine management system wears, you may notice poor idle quality, stalling, and poor fuel economy. A car may run for months with a malfunctioning sensor, but eventually the problem may progress to a stalling condition or a serious lack of power.
A Check Engine light will normally be observed as well.
  • Low fuel pressure: A fuel pump moves fuel from the fuel tank, through the fuel filter, and to the engine to be burned in the engine cylinders. If the fuel pump or filter begins to fail, lower than specified fuel pressure may cause various symptoms.
Symptoms of a failing fuel pump or clogged fuel filter may include sputtering, hesitation during acceleration, power loss when the car is under load, and finally an engine that will not start. Proper maintenance, including replacing the fuel filter as scheduled, will help prolong the service life of the fuel pump and maintain proper fuel pressure.
  • Gross intake manifold leak: While this is not a common occurrence, a manifold leak does happen. This will cause the manifold to draw additional air via the leak, putting too much air into the cylinders and decreasing the amount of gasoline that is delivered in relation to air.
The engine will run rough and sluggish under such conditions. As the situation gets worse, it may eventually cause the car to stall. A hissing sound or Check Engine light may be observed as well.
  • Malfunctioning electronic throttle control: Most late-model vehicles utilize an electronically controlled throttle to control airflow into the engine. This system relies on multiple electronic inputs, computers, and motors to control engine speed. If the system detects a malfunction, the computer will usually shut down the throttle opening as a precaution. In this case, multiple error codes will be logged, a Check Engine light may be displayed, and the vehicle may not exceed 35 to 40 mph.

The above information about the sensor being located at the top of the motor to the passenger side of center is bogus. That is only the pig tail plug in. The actual sensor pig tail continues down below, underneath the plastic lower timing belt cover, on the front of the motor, just above the crankshaft timing gear.

It is a very involved process of removing and replacing. You will have to remove all of the belts, the front timing belt covers, (upper and lower). You will also have to remove the front bracket that is mounted to the front of the block, which serves as the mount for the power steering pump, the alternator and the A/C compressor.You will also have to remove the crankshaft pulley. You cannot remove the plastic lower timing belt cover unless you remove all of these things first. The sensor is located underneath the lower cover. It has two bolts that hold it in place. You will have to remove these two bolts.

The crankshaft pulling bolt is a right handed thread and loosens by turning counter clockwise. The pulley will slip off but is a very tight fit. Do not try to turn it while removing it as there is a small pin that keeps it aligned to one position. Use a small ball pine hammer to tap it loose.

It is also a good idea to remove the electric cooling fan shroud that is mounted to the inside side of the radiator and the radiator hoses to give yourself more room to work. It has only two bolts at the top holding it in place. And then slips into two retaining clips at the bottom. Lifting it will pull it out of these retaining clips.

When you remove the small bypass hose located at the top of the radiator , to the passenger side, be careful not to break off the small nipple protruding out of the radiator tank. It is plastic and will break easily if you try to pull the rubber bypass hose from it. This will have to be taken to a radiator shop to have repaired if you accidentally break this off. Be sure to carefully loosen the hose from this nipple before trying to pull it off.

And one more thing, if you go to that much trouble to replace this sensor, it is a good idea to go ahead and replace the timing belt as well. It is a maintenance item and you will have to go through the same process to replace it as well. Do it once and do it all.

Be careful there.. If you remove the Throttle Position Sensor TPS or the throttle Cable, the engine light will come on because there is a certain setting that needs to be done to ensure accurate emission control.

What would cause your accelerator to stop working?


My 2003 Sorento started but wouldn't accelerate with a fault light in the engine management section, turned out to be water had ingressed from the airbox and trickled down to the accelerator pedal and got into the accentuator. Unplug and remove the throttle pedal, open the accentuator and dry it out with a hair dryer, re assemble. Throttle will work but you'll need to get the fault light reset.

you may have air in the brake lines & they need bleeding or it could be a faulty brake master cylinder try bleeding the system first to see if that solves the problem.......hope this helps......cheers.

This could be a number of things , get the OBD codes read as should give code for the faulty part (hopefully), it is a common faulty with this engine , try this site for more info from those who have had the same happen
