Is it advisable to use both relay and thermostat in nissan primera car?

My car, requires the radiator fan to be running for proper water circulation into the engine, is it good I include relay even though the thermostat is still in place?

sounds like the thermostat. the thermostat lets the water flow from the block to the top of the radiator.

you may have bad waterpump,the impeller on pump may be borken, just because it doesnt leak doesnt mean its good.also could have exhaust entering cooling system (bad headgasket) if pump is good have a block test done.

You need to diagnose the problem. The fan is doing what it is being told to do by the computer. You stated the temp gage on the dash is in the HOT position. Either the engine is very hot and the fan needs to run to remove heat even after it is shut off or the gage, coolant sensor or temp sender is defective. Try running it temporarly without a thermostat and see what happens, you may have bought a defective thermostat.

Probably not water pump. Engine is notourious for vapour lock.
Cooling system must be blead of air before thermostat will work. Cool bottom rad hose is a dead give away. If you are still watching this forum reply , and I will walk you through the only way I know how to make it work properly. It's actually easy if you do it my way. I have worked on lots of cars , and this engine was the hardest to bleed out. Did one Yesterday , and works perfect.

No water circulation leading to overheating


How do you know that there is no water circulation?
You need to check the thermostat, the solution in the coolant cant be just plain water, it should be 50/50 and make sure that there is no deposits built up in the radiator. Also check the water pump to be sure that the fins are not worn out.

The water tank boils a lot when the car is driven for about 15 to 20 minutes and it begins to spill out. this prevents the cars from running smoothly and easily. what should be done to solve this problem?


First check to make sure you have no oil reidue in your cooling system. What you describe is a common symptom of a blown head gasket or other combustion chamber leak. Also check your oil and make sure it doesn't have a milky appearance. If both of those check out, run the car with the radiator cap off and let it get up to normal operating temperature. You should see the coolant flowing through the radiator. If you don't see the flow at normal operating temperature, suspect the thermostat. When the car reaches normal operating temperature, the fan should also cycle on and off. If it doesn't check your fuses and relays to make sure they're OK. If they're good, try applying a seperate 12V source to the fan. If it powers up then suspect the fan's thermostatic control. Good luck.

Overheating... already replaced radiator and thermostat


When the radiator was replaced, I would assume that the cap has been replaced as well. Radiator caps that have worn out release steam from the system which means lesser water being circulated. Check if your coolant/water decreases. It may be a leak from the hoses or the engine itself. The leak from the engine may be a bad water pump or the water pump may be bad and water is not circulated correctly. Check the also the fan if it is running once the engine has warmed up. Check the fuses for the fan and its relay. Swapping relays with the AC fan to test is one way of testing if it is the relay or the fan that could be bad.

Engine is running hot


Check coolant reservoir level, check cooling fan if working, check if no leaks on the water pump...If engine newly installed, chances are drive belts are not installed properly.

After the vehicle is running for an hour, the vehicle get hot and shut itself off.. After it cool down, it start up. We were told it might be in the steering column.


have you replaced yor thermostat? have you checked your radiator cooling fans to see if they are coming on while your car is heating up? when your temp. guage is halfway up your fan should come on. you can check fuses and relays in fuse box[black box under hood drivers side] check those to see if fuses are blown or if fan relays are coming on[ticking while engine heating up]radiator could need flushing out also, just narrow your search some by elimination. if you open radiator cap before you start engine,then start motor, let it warm up.look for circulation,,flow of fluid,bubbling, then thats a sign it's circulating,thermostat is good. no flow means that thermostat not opening,thats bad thermostat.replace the thermostat.if not that are fans coming on? when engine at mid range on temp. guage does fan come on? if not check fuses @ fan relay. if fan comes on ,it's good.check water pump pulley for wobbly pulley while motor not running, shake pulley back @ forth for play. any play in pulley means bad water pump. are the belts on? i went through everything i would look for myself. hope this finds your problem!!!!

1. Improper water circulation: Sometimes, eventhough you are sure that you have enough water on your radiator, your car still overheats. It might probably be that the water is cannot circulate properly, which results to improper cooling process. There are several reasons for this which you can discover by yourself. To verify if the water circulates properly, start your engine without the radiator cap. If water circulation is good, you should notice that the water pops smoothly over the top but still retains the amount. Another way to check, detach one of the ends of your radiator hose from your radiator and see if water flows continously over.
If water doesn’t circulates well, check the thermostat if it’s open. It should be open, meaning clean, and the water can pass through it.
If thermostat is clean and still the water doesn’t circulate properly, then you have to check the water pump. That’s probably where the problem is. A little leak on the pump will cause improper flow of water through the radiator system.
If you are sure that the problem is not about water circulation, another thing you can consider is check the engine oil. Very low amount of oil can cause greater friction of the mechanical system of your engine. If it’s not time to change oil yet, you can add over some amount of oil until advisable amount is reached.
While we can’t be always sure about our engine, especially if it’s not new, we should be prepared when it happens. Bringing extra gallon of water in your trunk will surely help.

Sounds like coolant isn't circulating. While moving engine making pump circulate coolant and fresh air hitting front of radiator. At idle or a stop, engine not making pump run as fast and there is no fresh air hiiting radiator ( especially if fan isn't working properly) Check out water pump and cooling fan.

Running hot all water going straight to overflow tank


Check the thermostat. If the upper hose does not feel very hot to the touch when the car is warmed up already, this indicates the thermostat is not opening, and therefore the water cannot circulate causing the overheating problem. Second possiblity is the radiator fan. If the car tends to overheat only on city driving it is a the radiator fan not coming on. This is either due to a bad radiator fan, blown fuse,bad relay, or a bad temperature sensor or temperature switch. If the car tends to overheat at highway speed, then it is the radiator being clogged up, and not letting enough water circulation when demand is at its highest which is high engine rpm.

Overheating


The engine is kept cool by a liquid circulating through the engine to a radiator. In the radiator, the liquid is cooled by air passing through the radiator tubes. The coolant is circulated by a rotating water pump driven by the engine crankshaft. The complete engine cooling system consists of a radiator, recovery system, cooling fan, thermostat, water pump and serpentine belt.

Check the coolant level in the recovery bottle or surge tank, usually mounted on the inner fender. With the engine cold, the coolant level should be at the FULL COLD or between the FULL HOT and ADD level. With the engine at normal operating temperature, the coolant level should be at the FULL HOT or HOT mark. Only add coolant to the recovery bottle or surge tank as necessary to bring the system up to a proper level. On any vehicle that is not equipped with a coolant recovery bottle or surge tank, the level must be checked by removing the radiator cap. This should only be done when the cooling system has had time to sufficiently cool after the engine has been run. The coolant level should be within 2 in. (51mm) of the base of the radiator filler neck. If necessary, coolant can then be added directly to the radiator.

While you are checking the coolant level, check the radiator cap for a worn or cracked gasket. If the cap doesn't seal properly, fluid will be lost and the engine will overheat.

Worn caps should be replaced with a new one.

Periodically clean any debris; leaves, paper, insects, etc. from the radiator fins. Pick the large pieces off by hand. The smaller pieces can be washed away with water pressure from a hose.

Carefully straighten any bent radiator fins with a pair of needle nose pliers. Be careful, the fins are very soft. Don't wiggle the fins back and forth too much. Straighten them once and try not move them again. It is recommended that the radiator be cleaned and flushed of sludge and any rust build-up once a year. If this has not been administered within the stated time, this may be why your vehicle is overheating at this time. Have the Radiator flushed asap if this is the case.

Now, if the coolant level is proper and, the cap is in fair or good condition, i would advise to move in the direction of the cooling fans and sensors as well. These fans are vital to the cooling process as well. The cooling fans must cycle in intervals to keep the coolant cool during stop and go driving or, long idle. They are also very important during the operational period of the AC during travel as well. i recommend inspecting the cooling fans while the engine is running. they should cycle during the running period. if thsi is not the case, you will need to test the operational value of these devices. The test procedure follows below


TESTING


1. If the fan doesn't operate, disconnect the fan and apply voltage across the fan terminals. If the fan still doesn't run, it needs a new motor.

2. If the fan runs, with the jumpers but not when connected, the fan relay is the most likely problem.

3. If fan operates but a high current draw is suspected continue with the following ammeter TESTING.

4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the cooling fan.

5. Using an ammeter and jumper wires, connect the fan motor in series with the battery and ammeter. With the fan running, check the ammeter reading, it should be 3.4-5.0 amps; if not, replace the motor.

6. Reconnect the fan's electrical connector. Start the engine, allow it to reach temperatures above 194°F and confirm that the fan runs. If the fan doesn't run, replace the temperature switch.



Ok, Now we will move on to the next possible issue. The water pump. ok, due to the fact that your pump is driven by the drive belt, you will need to start the engine and listen for bad bearing, using a mechanic's Stethoscope or rubber tubing.

* Place the stethoscope or hose on the bearing or pump shaft.
* If a louder than normal noise is heard, the bearing is defective.

Replace the pump in this case.

You will also notice leakage around the pump housing if the seal has failed as well. this will strain the impeller and, ruin the pump.

Now. the last area of concern will be the thermosta. this is the most common issue that will inflict overheating in many vehicles. The thermostat is used to control the flow of engine coolant. When the engine is cold, the thermostat is closed to prevent coolant from circulating through the engine. As the engine begins to warm up, the thermostat opens to allow the coolant to flow through the radiator and cool the engine to its normal operating temperature. Fuel economy and engine durability is increased when operated at normal operating temperature.


There are several ways to test the opening temperature of a thermostat.

One method does not require that the thermostat be removed from the engine.

* Remove the radiator pressure cap from a cool radiator and insert a thermometer into the coolant.
* Start the engine and let it warm up. Watch the thermometer and the surface of the coolant.
* When the coolant begins to flow, this indicates the thermostat has started to open.
* The reading on the thermometer indicates the opening temperature of the thermostat.
* If the engine is cold and coolant circulates, this indicates the thermostat is stuck open and must be replaced.

The other way to test a thermostat is to remove it.

* Suspend the thermostat completely submerged in a small container of water so it does not touch the bottom.
* Place a thermometer in the water so it does not touch the container and only measures water temperature.
* Heat the water.
* When the thermostat valve barely begins to open, read the thermometer. This is the opening temperature of this particular thermostat.
* If the valve stays open after the thermostat is removed from the water, the thermostat is defective and must be replaced.
* Several types of commercial testers are available. When using such a tester, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions.
* Markings on the thermostat normally indicate which end should face toward the radiator. Regardless of the markings, the sensored end must always be installed toward the engine.
* When replacing the thermostat, also replace the gasket that seals the thermostat in place and is positioned between the water outlet casting and the engine block.

* Generally, these gaskets are made of a composition fiber material and are die-cut to match the thermostat opening and mounting bolt configuration of the water outlet.
* Thermostat gaskets generally come with or without an adhesive backing. The adhesive backing of gaskets holds the thermostat securely centered in the mounting flange, leaving both hands of the technician free to align and bolt the thermostat securely in place.
