Hi, I live in the UK and recently bought a used 2006 RX8 for my partner. The engine ran, but sounded lumpy on idle. When i took it to the dealer he drove the vehicle and said it was way down on power. He went on to explain that the rotary engine had a very short life expectancy (average 60K miles). The problem apparently lies with the rotary wiper blades which effectively seal the combustion chamber as the rotor rotates eccentrically around the cylinder creating compression. These blades wear if not lubricated well and end up damaging the nickle chamber liner. The engines are very oil thirsty and must be serviced regularly. If an oil change is late it can drastically reduce the engines life expectancy even further. In the UK Mazda will not honor any warranty claims on the engine. However, in the US, Mazda have agreed to change out defective motors that have been serviced regularly by a Mazda dealer. I wish you well because they are an awesome car when running right :)

I'm sorry, a bit of googling revealed that this was only honored up to 2012 on a 2004 model. Im afraid it will be an engine rebuild required at your expense. May be worth calling Mazda to see if they may offer a good will contribution?

I’ve had a lot of experience with Mazda RX-8’s... Because I owned one. But your problem could just be the seals of the Rotary.. Try to replace those...

The mazda rx8 is hard starting and not idling properly. How do u set the timing for the rotas. Do u have a diagram

there are no timing on the rotors for a wankel engine. The timing is controlled by a computer for the RX-8. The sensors & distributors can be adjusted on the RX7's & other Mazdas but I know that there were major engine changes to the RX-8 so I can't tell you for sure. I use to have an RX-7 and worked on it all the time.

Engine rolls over does not start

I had this problem. Twice! It sounded like it wanted to turn over but couldn't. Your engine may be flooded. I had to have mine towed to the mazda dealer (if under 100,000 miles it is under warrenty) so they could fix it. The second time they had to replace my engine because of a bad compression ring.

2004 mazda wont start, blew a front tire and had to be put on rollback. Sat all nite, and now wont start. will crank and can smell fuel.

flooded engine common problem remove all plugs and fuel pump fuse. get fuel out of engine do not istall fuel pump fuse re install all plugs I suggest a good charger be used as system can kill batt very quick run to wires from fuel pump fuse into seating area start cranking the engine over wires not touching once compression sounds alright touch wires to geather (may have to repeat these deflooding wire touching procedure many times) once started do not turn off car till normal operating temp . Once hot turn car off remove wires and re install fuel pump fuse .With RX-8 u cannot just start and stop car right away as in washing car as it can produce this same condition ALWAYS let car warm up before turning off.

Mazda 2005 RX-8 wont start... ran yesterday, lights on & sounds

I have a 2004 that had the same problem. It sounds like the engine might be flooded. The best thing to do is to remove the fuse to the fuel pump. It will be listed under the fuse cover under the hood. Mine was a 20 amp but check to be sure. With the fuse removed, crank the engine for a minute to remove any fuel flooding the engine. Replace the fuse and crank the engine in 10 second intervals without touching the gas or you will reflood the engine. This process can sometimes take awhile and will drain your battery, so have it connected to an additional power source ( i.e. another car battery or jump box). When the car finally cranks over there will be a huge cloud of smoke so don't be alarmed when it happens. Lastly some words to the wise. This process CAN ruin your starter, but is essentially the same process that the dealership will you except that they will remove the spark plugs to drain the fuel and then charge you for new ones. If this process doesn't work then you probably need new spark plugs which is going to cost quite a bit. I was quoted upwards of $525 to fix this problem until I talked to a Mazda mechanic and found out how to do this myself. Just make sure that the engine is up to running temperature before turning the car off and you shouldn't encounter this problem again. I hope this helps you, and remember that if all else fails the dealer can fix it. It won't be cheap, but they will get it done.

I almost forgot, you HAVE to get the oil changed as soon as possible because there is probably gas in the oil now.
