Question about 2001 Ford F150 Styleside SuperCrew

2 Answers

2001 Ford F150 V6, Truck started spitting and sputtering and check engine light turned on. Originally I thought that I had a fuel problem and maybe needed a tune up so I put new plugs and wires and all new filters, none of these fixed the problem. I hooked up a code scanner and it told me system lean Bank 2. I changed out the O2 sensor and still the same. Could the miss and the system lean code be coming from a faulty injector on bank 2 or could something else be causing this.

I thought that maybe a bad coil pack would cause the problem so I changed it and the code and the miss continue to occur. I asked a ford mechanic friend of mine and he seemed to think that a missfiring coil would trigger a system rich code due to the unburned fuel. The only other thing I could think of is a misfiring injector but I think that either way weather a coil pack or injector missfire it should still trigger a cylinder misfire code.

I know that the 5.4l are known too misfire if you wash them because the water runs down between the coil and the heads. pull all your coilpacks and check for rust on the spring in the boot and use compressed air to blow any exessive mosture out of the coil to plug area.

Check your ignition coil. If faulty, It may cause intermitted misses and therefore may cause excess unburnt gas i.e. lean mixture. Hopefully this helps

I am curious to know what the scan told you when you originally checked it? A lot of people spend way more money than they should changing parts and guessing at the fix. Tell me a little more about the what the scan results.

We have a 1999 F-350 7.3 desil Truck that can only be started with starting fluid. Once started it spits and sputters. We have replaced the fuel pump and filter and the engine possitioning sensor. We also...

Hm. it's a Diesel. So, it uses glow plugs.
Diesel engines work on the principle of exploding diesel fuel vs. burning gasoline fuel.

If it is spitting and sputtering, there is a possible problem with the fuel that is in the tank.

You see, Diesel fuel, according to Wikipedia, changes its formula drastically from winter to summer to work best in winter or summer climates.

I would drain the Diesel out of the tank and replace with fresh Diesel from your local Diesel Fueling station.

If this doesn't work, then, you may have a sensor gone awry or a compression issue.

Good luck on this one.

Engine cranks but wont start

Usually if no rpm signal, the vehicle won't start. Engine cranking, did you check for spark at the spark plugs? The fuel pressure you listed may have been the initial prime. It sounds like no injector pulse. The rpm signal comes from crank sensor. If your missing rpm signal, may thought is the crank sensor.
Were there any applicable trouble codes?

Truck runs like ****

You have checked the fuel pressure? Do you have a check engine light? As for the tank filling up the wrong one, that is caused from a bad tank select valve on the frame rail.

My battery drains almost instanly

You may need to have it test with a load, i.e. while still in truck. While there is no load it is possible for it to check out as good, but once it needs to "work" it will give out. The other option could be that there could possible be a wiring problem. The wire from the alternator is coroded or broken. Use a volt meter to check votage at the begining and end of each wire.

Shaking badly

My '97 F-150 started doing the same thing a few weeks ago. Took it to the Ford garage yesterday. They found a bad spark plug wire and because of that, a bad plug also. Have you had it tuned-up lately?
