Question about Ford Ranger

3 Answers

93 Ford Ranger,3.0 jerks while at cruising speeds. It has a squeal on cold starts that goes away after driving a few blocks. And rough idle. This engine does not have an EGR valve. I was told it could be a bad distributor or cam sensor. Does it have a cam sensor and/or distributor? I dont want to feel stupid when I take it in and tell the mechanic that info and he tells me that I dont have them. But I think my older Ranger (93) does have distributor and not a synchrnizer. Thank you!

I just changed my fan clutch on my 93 Ford Ranger and the difference is amazing. It stopped making noise and it drives much smoother now. The fan clutch was only $45 and fairly easy to replace so you might want to check into that.

It does have both. And it could be either one of them, as well as bad throttle position sensor, bent pulley or other things.

Squeal could be the fanbelt!
[loose or damaged]
Yes it has a electronic ditributor on it!
im not sure on the cam sensor but either way it would still be checked as part of the tune up process!
I hope that helps you
Cheers Rob.

Here are the most common causes of idle surge, rough idle esp when cold, other symptoms include stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake

That is the ignition module associated with the dist. if so equipped. If no distributor, cold be electronic spark block fro spark distribution.

I Have a couple of questions. First question does engine surge when idleing cold? 2. Does engine start quickly without a lot of cranking, Cold or warm? 3. Do you have funny smell at highway speed, or after you stop? With out this info and your imput, I would only be guessing. I am retired mechanic of 25 years. and would like to help if u need me.

You state you changed plugs and wires - Do distributor cap & rotor? If not you should then set timing. That should cure hesitation (might change fuel filter also and run good fuel system cleaner through it)
Prob 2 - sounds like a u-joint or possible brake pad/rotor issue. Does the squeal only happen in mornings when cold? Sometimes after sitting overnight, rotors get condensation and when backing out they'll squeal/grind. Somethings to look at...

Rough idle, cruise control also stopped working

Sounds like you could have gotten some water in your fuel tank from that fill up. Go to a autoparts store and get a product to put in the tank that takes care of water in fuel. Use it when you fill the tank up a few times after and hopefully it goes away. Whenever you can't sustain power in the engine or it runs rough then your cruise control will constantly be shut off because the engine doesn't have the power to keep the speed up and should go away once your engine is running clean again.

Good Luck

This year of ranger had a few flaws, In one case, a break power booster was robbing the vacumm, you can test this by plugging it off and seeing the differance, but you will have limited brakes. This model year had a problem with a vacuum leak on the manifold. You can check these in many ways, but please don't use starting fluid. The rear of the manifold usually on the drivers side where it seals to the block.
Also, in 2 other cases a cracked head has gave me the same problem. It is caused from a loss of vacuum.
