If the speed sensor was the issue you should have a check engine light on. I you do not have a check engine light then you most likely just need to remove the speedo and have it repaired, it is electronic and the little motor that move the needle fails, it is known as the "stepper Motor"

Pull your old speed-do cable out and lay it on the ground ,turn the end of the cable by hand where it came out of the transmission, when turning look at the other end to see if it is turning, if not bad cable, so go to the bone yard and pick up a used cable.

1997 Chevy suddenly loses speedometer and downshifts to 1st

Sounds like the transmission speed sensor or the wiring from there back to the computer.
But you should have a trouble code for the speed sensor.

Speedometer doesn't work

No it would not be the speed sensor, you would have other problems. I suggest you just have a tech that is failing.

1997 Chevy Lumina the speedometer quit working and now it will not shift over while driving what could the problem be? It started yesterday...When the speedometer works the car drives fine bt then wi

could be the VSS - vehicle speed sensor .
Speedometer and Odometer
The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is a gear driven permanent magnet generator. The vehicle transaxle houses the VSS. The VSS generates a sine wave output with a frequency proportional to the vehicle speed.
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) converts the CKT 389 signal to an output that switches to ground at a frequency of 4000 pulses per mile. The CKT 389 signal drives the speedometer and the odometer. Various other vehicle components use the CKT 389 signal. Refer to Engine Controls.

Speedometer acting erratic on 99 chevy cavalier

Check the VVS (vehical velocity sensor) "speed sensor", The vss controls shifting and cruise control as well as speedometer. If the Cavalier shift's fine and cruise control work, the it's going to be a good chance that the speedometer n the instrument panel may have a bad connection or the stepper motor needs to be replaced. Get a service book and attempted to check for voltage going to speedo cluster( at dash), to determine if your stepper motor is bad and replace the motor or the whole instrument panel.
Good luck and thank you for using fixya.

The speed sensor for your 1991 Chevy Cavalier Z24 is located on the transmission just inboard of where the passenger side drive axle enters the trans-axle.

If your odometer is working and your speedo needle doesnt indicate correctly then your problem is the stepper motor in the cluster. I have repaired a lot of instrument clusters....cost is 105.00
