Question about 1996 Lexus LS 400

Open Question

96 lexus ls400.Replaced alternator 2x, and battery, and neg batt clamp, alt fuse. Still getting voltage regulator failed message. Cause? Bad ground or short? Bad pigtail?

The most likely problem is your alternator, the alternator charges your battery while the engine is running, if the alternator is bad you have a dead battery, but you can check with a volt meter to ensure that is your problem. Start your car (use a battery charger or jump to start it if you need to) and put your meter on the battery post's. If your reading 13volts or so your alternator is working and maintaing voltage, however if your reading starts dropping to 10 or less(may take a few moments to drop) then it's probably your alternator. You can also check your battery's voltage before starting your vechile, if the voltage increases after you start the vechile then it seem to be charging. Alternators can be repalced somewhat easily, it's only two boltsm however you do have to remove the fan belt, and re-route after installing the new alternator. If you have some expirence working on cars you can do this yourself in your driveway.

3 wires for the altenator all controll the voltage regulator. You need the ground as said and one is 5 volt constant and the other is 5 volt switched.

SOURCE: elec problem between alternator and battery

The Problem was that the plug-in that goes into the altenator was not getting a good conection. Drove the van after that I had it fixed and the battery light came back on and I checked the altenator and the plug-in had fallen completly off. Plugged it back in and made sure that it snapped in completly and now it is fine.

problem is that the voltage regulators on the 1.8t which I am sure is the same on the TDI alternator....is that they may work fine when they are cold....but once they warm up is when they start acting up and causing problems. I assume is has to do with some resistor over heating. This is just a common problem noticed by most people over at VWvortex.com.
So you can take your alternator to get tested but if it is tested cold then well it may appear to be working ok. When in reality it is broken. Trust me...it is a cheap enough part and easy enough to fix to not just try it. Some can even change the regulator without taking the alternator out. If you have small enough hands I can see it being done.

could be a fuse in the circuit blown, bad wire , bad earth (ground) , faulty regulator if it is not in the back of the alternator

I have a 1994 lexus ls400 while driving the dash lights start flickering then car loses all power I replaced the starter alt and battery any solutions?


You may want to check out the ignition switch. The starter and battery should not be considered as even a possibility because the car starts. If the alternator is not producing enough voltage or amperage it could cause a similar problem, but the lights would dim and then go out.

Battery light alternator


The Charge lamp comes on with the Alternator fails to keep battery charge going. (lots of way to fail, and ALT Is 100% good) it's a system. each part of it must be good, end to end.
so...
i put my voltmeter across battery, i start car, i see 13.3 to 15vdc, alt is good.
no? , i see now, 12.2v. ALt is dead, (i didnt say bad) and battery is sightly discharged, 12.6v is charged. (key off, rested voltage)
This 12v tells me the ALT is shut down. only why is the question.

how can any charge system fail,
bad battery tops the list here, they LOVE to fail.
1: belt slips.
2: belt missing
3: bad alt.
4: bad wires to ALT . (corrosion on any wire or lug)
5: fuses blown , any listed below.:
your alt is not an ECU controlled, alt ,its 100% self contained

did you ever remove the ALT and blow the 100 amp fuseable link
the first step of any alt pul, is the pull the NEG, battery lug or BOOM.

im logged in to alldata.com so can you.

and what do i see.
a 5 wire ALT. one is the frame ground, so it must not be rusty or..... it fails. frame to engine block. no rust here.

wire L , yellow.goes to dash LEDs (alt failure idiot lamps) (this works)
wire. S white goes to ALT 5a fuse, is it blown?
wire :B B/G color, goes to the 100 amp link fuse. (blown>?)
wire IG Red-white, goes to a fuse marked 10A gauge.

i think the IG wire is the voltage sense wire.
no sense, no charge. I think the whole I/P dash cluster goes dead when this fuse blows.

The S wire is the boot strap voltage sense, it wakes up the regulator .
if open , the reg stays asleep, as does ALT.
Alternators can not self start, the regulator has boot strap device
that cures that. called self excitation. so this wire is critical.
All wires except the L wire is critical. in this case.

the B wire is the big wire, it charges the battery . 50amps or more..

any of the 5 paths open , kills the ALT dead.
The REG inside the ALT can also shut it down.
eg: battery bad, with huge cell resistances. total.
eg: overvoltge for any reasons. including attempts top run car with no battery, (dont ask)
eg: over current (battery cells 1 to 6 shorted) or 25 KC lamps added.
eg: over temperature shut down.

that is about it.

Chevy venture draining battery


The alternator is out. The ONLY time your vehicle uses battery power (while the engine is turning) is during start up. After that the alternator runs the car.

With the car running put a volt meter on the alternator. Red lead on the big nut on back side if alt. Black lead on the neg batt cable or a good body ground. Voltage should be around 14.5v DC.
Then still with engine running, red lead to batt postive, black lead to batt neg. Voltage should read the same. 14.5v DC
If not, the alt. Is bad

1994 E150 van ford no alt power have changed the alt. charged the batt


There is a fuse or fuseable link between the alt and battery, and the alt gets a signal from the key to activate the voltage regulator.
I would check for batt voltage at the alternator and you may need a wiring diagram to check for key voltage.

Check the Alt. Fuse in the engine compartment fuse box, if Ok, take vehicle to an AutoZone or Checkers store and have them check your charging system,

I think the battery is toasted and/or the alternator regulator is not working properly. If the alternator and battery test fine, then your problem could be a broken, burned out or loose wire.

I have a 96 ford explorer I just replaced the battery and the alternator in it. When starrted the battery lite stays on and the alternator does not charge it. Is there a linkable fuse or something I am...


Trace all of the wires that are attached to the alternator. If there is a fusible link or a broken wire you will find it. If the alternator is charging but something else is wrong the alternator will pull a steel wrench toward it. You did not mention the voltage regulator. You will find it when tracing your wires. Look it over carefully. Voltage regulators fail keeping the alternator from working. Parts stores have regulators and they are easy to install.

My alternator tested good battery tested good but still the battery light comes and van dies and the wires are grounded good and in great shape we dont know whats going on


Check the earth on the alternator [connect a volt meter between the alt case and the neg batt terminal]
If you read more than half a volt then you got a bad ground on your alternator.Also check the resistance of the main wire going from the alt to the battery[also batt terminals [think simple]

1989 Ford F250 pickup- amp meter reads backwards


If you had a dead short when connecting the neg. battery cable, the battery was being installed backwards or you had grounded the alternator + lead somhow.

I suspect whnen you installed the battery, you have burnt all of the diodes out in the alternator and the AMP meter is showing no charge. The AMP meter also could have taken a beating in the reversal.

Check the battery in in correctly first. If not reinstall or get the correct battery. Then check the battery voltage with the engine running. If less then 13.2. Replace the alternator again.
