Have you checked any of the fuses? Not only check the fuse, check the fuse circuit for voltage, use a test light. At the moment I can't rule out the headlamp switch or dimmer? If you need to enlarge diagram, try clicking on it. If it doesn't work, try clicking on your highlighted post, then try to enlarge diagram.

My headlights on my 2000 Mercury Mountaineer don't work. It's not the fuse. What could it be?

Check to see if your high beams work, also play with the combination switch that controls the headlights, it is typical for it to wear out and cause these problems.

My headlights do not work on brights.

You most likely need new bulbs, or a new fuse. Check the bulbs and see that the filaments aren't burned out. If you have dual beam headlights, there will be one bulb on each side with 2 filaments inside. If you have single beam headlights there will be 2 bulbs on each side. If they look alright, find out which fuse controls your hi-beams and see that it isn't burned out.

Headlights on my 2000 ranger

Very unlikely that its the switch, disconnect the connector of the bad light use a 12v test light to check for voltage at the headlight, One cavity is Ground and one is HIgh and one is low beam if all have the correct power make sure that the Ground is good both in the connector and where it connects to the body even if you have to fabricate a "new" gound wire temporally to test. Please rate this advice a fixya if you find it helpful and contact me if you need further help on this problem
