My 2002 A-4 3.0 liter will crank and starts but shuts down or won't stay on . non-turbo ..

You need to have a Powertrain control module fault code test run, this test is key to understanding what may be causing this, this engine is 100% computer controlled.

I have a 1994 ford ranger, shuts off while driving, won't crank until I disconnect the battery and reconnect will go a few miles then the process starts again

Check the ground wires. There are many. Main 3 are from the battery to engine, battery to body and engine to body.

05 ford ranger started knocking and shut off now won't crank. What is wrong?

Started knocking and shut off ? Now will not start?
That sounds bad - check fluids - engine oil and coolant - those three symptoms can indicate overheating (either by lack of coolant or engine oil).
Did either fluid get low AND does the engine oil look contaminated - milky colored and way overful.
Not Start? Does it turn the engine and just not fire up running?
Or does the engine not turn over at all?
If the engine is siezed - you can tell by the electrical power needed to crank the engine - turn on the lights and try to crank the engine - if all you hear from the starter is a click and all the lights dim - that means a lot of power is needed like:
1. the battery doesn't have enough power - jump start to verify
2. or it requires more power to turn the engine than the battery can provide - engine siezed - try turning the engine by hand with socket/wrench to verify.
I hope your engine is not siezed - if so - hope you still have warranty coverage on the powertrain.
Please let me know what you find and if this helps?

If it has a 4.0 liter engine the crank position sensor has a long history of causing this problem.

1997 honda civic, it shut down while running (50-55mph), tried to turn it on and sounds like it trying to start but wont go...

i hate to say this but you may have broken your timing belt, and thats real bad on a honda. just loosen the valve cover bolts and remove the plastic top cover over the belt and see if the belt moves then cranking the engine, i hope for your sake this isn't the case because hondas are equipped with an interference engine which means when the timing belt goes the valves hit the pistons
