Question about Ford F-150

Cold or hot my great little pickup cranks along time before starting. Acts like no fuel is present. Thanks for your time. 1987 Ford F-150 5.0 Automatic 4WD.

87 f-150 starting problems


Take your battery somewhere and have it load tested. If it tests good it has to be your starter. The alternator has to be working or you would have a dead battery all the time. Unless you are putting it on a charger or jumping it.

Make sure your getting 12V at the starter (fm batt) & have a good, clean ground from the batt. Good luck

Pickup runs fine when cold 5 minutes later spits and sputters and dies wait a minute starts up runs good for 30 seconds. then dies again


A common problem with Ford products built in the 1980s is the ignition module mounted on the distributor.
You will need to figure out if it is a fuel problem or ignition problem to proceed.

Does a1987 Dodge 150 pickup truck 4x4 have a fuel regulator? If so where is it located?


if it starts OK when warm , but not when cold , I would say it is the temperature sensor, sometimes on the intake manifold, engine block, or even the radiator, but don't confuse it with the fan sensor on the rad.

1987 ford 150. Here is the problem. She will cold start and even run but once she gets warm up the fuel injectors stop pumping and she shuts off. You can tell it's not getting gas.


There are 2 possibilities that I know of. First, the module has a cold start circuit that switches to a RUN circuit after a temperature switch warms up. I can't say if the spark would stop before the gas does so if you feel this is a gas problem the module may not be your problem.

The second possibility is the fuel pump. There should be a fuel pump relay in addition to the fuse. Since it is not blowing the fuse, your relay may be cutting out. You may have a clogged fuel filter making the fuelpump overwork. It would help if you can get a pressure reading from the gas line.

Autozone and Oreillys do loan out tools with a deposit. They also scan your vehicle for free. Then you can test fuelpump pressure cold and hot.

Engine starves for fuel after running about 50 miles or so...


Has Neon do same, I ran fuel at low level, on hot day, ran engine until it started to act up & threw a fuel pressure gauge on it. Was at approx 5 psi. Cold next morning, 48-50 psi. Always hot day about 30-40 miles into work in morning, o.k. Sit in hot sun all day & would happen 3-4 times on way home. Sit and let cool, 20 minutes or so & go again for a while. Cool day, no problem. Change pump I would.
