99 Chrysler 300M gas gauge droping down to empty

Gas gauge drops down to empty, empty fuel light comes on and chimes, then gauge will pop back up to the correct level. Does this while driving, sometimes often, sometimes not as often. Very annoying, any suggestions would be appreciated.

You are going to have to replace the sending unit for the gas gauge, it is located in the fuel tank.

This usually results from a loose connection at the tank sender unit or a faulty unit ok
so go get it tested
easy to fix too
Cheers Rob.

weird...first thing to do is get a scanner hooked up to see what caused the check engine light-free, at pretty much any retail auto parts operation-i wouldn't get overly concerned with the gas gauge right now, teh code that tripped the check engine light might explain that problem.

Gas gauge goes to empty and then full after fillup

very well sounds like the sending unit in the tank. Try running some octane booster and fuel injection cleaner in tank of the truck to loosen any deposits on the float.

Speedometer on my 2004 Tiburon works thens cuts down to zero. Gas gauge is doing the same thing. Just put gas in drop down to empty yet still has gas in it.

Clean the connectors on the back of the BCM and on the back of the gauge cluster.

If that doesn't work, then it could be:
- Fuel Sender & Vehicle Speed Sensor (should cause your "Check Engine" light to come on)
- Gauge Cluster
- BCM

You'll have to diagnose each of these possibilities.

You weren't low on gas - your fuel tank sending unit is failing and needs replacement. It's inside the tank and usually can be replaced without replacing the fuel pump as well - don't get suckered into that.

the fuel gauge sending unit in the gas tank is a mechanical part, but you may have an electrical problem. the needle is moved by an electrical signal. you can check the wires coming out of the back of the gauge, one will run to a chassis ground. make sure that wire has a good connection to ground, first because it won't work right without it and second because it's lots easier than the next thing you will have to do if that doesn't make an improvement. if you see no difference after checking the ground then you need to drop the tank and replace the fuel level sending unit. you will have to remove the fuel pump to get to it so you might want to replace it while you have it out, that's your call. your vehicle is new enough that the decision would be more based on miles than age. hope that helps

Gas gauge works than doesnt than works again

This is the sensor in your fuel tank, they have little brushes on them that run on a reostat. it is a common problem, I have been able to remove them and fix them, although the best option is replacement.
