make sure you have it on number 1 cyl top dead center, cause you can actually have it on number 6 cyl instead of number 1... seen it many times, same as on 4 cyl inline... its that inline thing going on...

SOURCE: when setting the ignition timing

The engine timing markers down on the harmonic balancer/crankshaft pulley should be aligned with the timing indicator on the engine block to "0" degrees when the engine is in the compression stroke for the #1 cylinder, and this is TDC or "Top Dead Center". When something blows out of the spark plug hole that only means that the piston is coming up on TDC, but the crankshaft will still have to be turned until the timing markers are at "0" degrees. You should be sure that you do know how to properly align the timing marks to "0" degrees, and the timing marks must be set at "0" degrees before the distributor can successfully be installed.

Be certain that the timing marks are set at "0" degrees and on the compression stroke for the #1 cylinder, or the timing will be 180 degrees off when you install the distributor. This has to be precise and guessing will not get the distributor properly clocked in so that the ignition timing can be correctly set.

Once you are certain that the timing is set to "0" degrees "TDC", then mark the distributor housing where the #1 position on the distributor cap will be when the cap is installed on the distributor, so that the distributor housing shows a reference mark where the #1 position is, then the distributor should be installed so that the ignition rotor is pointing directly at the #1 position on the distributor housing, or just before the #1 position mark according to the rotation of the ignition rotor. The distributor should be able to turn and point the ignition rotor on either side of the #1 position mark to provide plenty of timing advance or ****** so that the ignition timing can properly be adjusted to specifications after the engine has been started.

Be sure that you follow the proper timing procedure for that vehicle and remove any timing spout connectors that are described in the set timing procedures

Also, be certain that you are actually using the #1 cylinder to set the engine to TDC and to actually time the engine with a timing light. Here is a firing order diagram that should also help to assist you. Let me know if you require any further assistance.

misfires can be caused by faulty ignition components, but they can also stem from other components. Such as faulty injectors, or improperly timed or unseated valves. Sounds like you have touched on all of your ignition suspects.
Are there any codes present other than P0304, P0305 and P0306? If so they should help guide you in the right direction. If not, You might want to make sure your valves are seating and if so, go ahead and swap an injector from a misfiring hole with a good one from a hole with no misfire. (like switch #2 and #4 injectors for example) if the misfire moves to cyl 2, you know the injector is at fault.

hawkie74542, As you are standing in front of the vehicle looking at the engine the spark plug on the right in the front is the number one cylinder. Remove the spark plug. On your crank shaft pulley find the timing mark and mark it with some whiteout or anything else that will show up well. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the mark lines up with zero on the timing gauge on the engine. When you have done this, with a long screwdriver check the hole where the number one spark plug was. You should not be able to put the screw driver in too far as the top of the piston should be right there at the top of the cylinder. This will get you to top dead center. The rotor should be pointing directly at the number one spark plug. Tighten the distributor down but not all the way as you will need to turn the distributor for the final timing. Replace the spark plug and wire and with a timing light finish the timing procedure. Good luck with this.

It should point to the contact just before number 1 cylinder, once motor running you should set ignition timing with a strobe

Are you sure you are on number 1 spark plug wire? if so your wires must be off on the cap. put the engine on top dead center on the compression stroke, that is with number 1 spark plug removed turn the motor over until you feel air rushing out of that plug hole and the timing marks line up at TDC. Then make sure that the rotor on the distributor is pointing at the number 1 plug wire, if not you will need to re-time the wires on the cap to where you make number 1 were the rotor is pointing and work clockwise around from there 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2.

I used to have one of these...there are 2 top dead centre positions you have to watch for. Top Dead Centre "Compression" and Top Dead Centre "Exhaust".

With the distributor cap on, you will know where number 1 is on the distributer, remove the distributor cap and then turn the motor using the crank...keep turning until you see the rotor pointing to number 1. If the number 1 piston is at TDC then you are good to go with it being at TDC Compression- rotor at 1.
If your rotor is at number 1 but your number 1 piston is down then you need to remove the distributor from the rotor 180 degrees then slide the distributor back into the block carefully...remembering to be careful because your oil pump is run by a shaft which snaps onto the bottom of the distributor.

timing is way to slow. are points gap set properly. I think they are set at .016 for used points.
Fireing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4
with timing mark set at top dead center .i think it is a ball on back of engine. distributer rotor should be at #! .

Changed the plugs wires and cap and rotor...think I might have screwed the firing order up....no misfire just wont turn over.


the wires to the plugs should not keep the motor from cranking over. If the battery is fully charged the ignition switch should engage the starter. If you think the firing order is wrong you need to determine 1 where is top dead center (the position the motor is in when #1 cylinder is at the top of the compression stroke). 2 what direction does the rotor turn 3 what is the firing order One way to make it easy to rotate the motor is to remove the spark plugs. no compression means no resistance to the starter so the motor should turn over with the key in the start position. If it won't crank over with the plugs out then something is wrong with the starter, battery, starter relay, or ignition switch. I always start with the basics. the battery should have at least 12.5 volts. if it does check the battery terminals. even if the starter is weak you should hear a click when the key is turned to the start position. Once you get the starter to turn over the motor you can tell when the number one cylinder is at top dead center by putting a finger over the spark hole as you crank over. You will feel the compression as the cylinder comes up on the compression stroke. I have used a large socket to slowly turn the motor over and when you are near top dead center you should be able to see the degrees of advance on the timing mark. Set the motor at top dead center then see where the rotor lines up with the wires on the distributor cap. that is where number one cylinder should fire. You then follow around in the direction that the rotor turns and the wires will corispond with the firing order. I always make a mark on the number one spot on the cap with a felt pen. That way you have a fixed reference point. Take care to verify that all the wires are to the proper plugs before trying to start. Take extra care at this point and make sure your firing order and rotor rotation are correct. I would triple check this. The firing order and rotor direction are usually somewhere on the autozone repair web site

Pulled distributor on 97 chevy truck v6 and cant seem to get it back in right! wont start! got it to top dead center many times! they say put rotor to cyl #1 but do they mean #1 in cap or face rotor to...


when the engine is a top dead center on cyl one put the distributor in so the rotor points to the no1 spark plug wire trminal on the cap try that let me know if it helps

How do you set the timing on a 1998 GMC Sierra?


The timing is not adjustable and it is computer controlled, but the distributor must still be clocked in properly and static timed, and here is how it is done.

There is a mark or notch on the distributor housing that the rotor should be pointing to when the engine is on top dead center. This static timing is all that matters and the computer will be able to control the timing as long as the ignition rotor is in that position when the engine is at top dead center.

1. Place the engine at top dead center.

2. Look under the distributor cap and find where the number one terminal runs under the distributor cap, and where that position on the distributor cap corresponds with the distributor housing, and it should match up to a mark or a notch on the distributor housing.

3. With the engine on top dead center the ignition rotor should be pointing to the mark or notch that is on the distributor housing, if it is not then loosen up the distributor and turn the distributor until the ignition rotor is pointing to the mark or notch on the distributor housing, the engine should now be static timed.

Need to know the plug wiring distributo to plugs


take distributor cap off turn engine over so u can work out which way the rotor arm spins.then turn engine over manually till u lign up timing mark on crank pulley roto shld now point to number 1.firing order is 1 3 4 2 making sure u do this cobination the way the rotor turns when engine is tiurning over

Ignition timing should be set at 10 degrees BTDC (before top dead center), with vacuum advance hose disconnected and plugged, engine idling at 800 rpm or less.

Ok that's pretty simple Put cylinder # 1 on TDC= top dead center on the (compressionstroke piston all the way up). Mark on metal part of distributor (with marker) where the number one is on the cap( that's where the number 1 wire plugs in) Then in-plant distributor make sure that rotor point is pointed to #1 on the cap, turn distributor shaft until this is achieved or as close as possible try to center shaft so you can adjust... ****** or advance to fine tune after you in-plant distributor if needed.
