SOURCE: front upper ball joint replacement

The dealer's answer (if you are interested).......

The ball joint is pressed into the upper control arm and has a tapered stud for attachment to the steering knuckle. The ball joint stud is attached and locked into the steering knuckle using a special nut. The ball joint is a sealed-for-life type and requires no maintenance. If the ball joint is defective it will require replacement of the entire upper control arm.

Sorry.

SOURCE: How to change upper control arm on 1996 Honda Civic DX ?

UPPER CONTROL ARM:

Do not disassemble the upper arm. If the ball joint or bushings are faulty, or the upper arm is damaged, the entire upper arm must be replaced.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2. Remove the front wheels. Support the lower control arm assembly with a floor jack.
  3. Separate the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle using a ball joint separator tool.
  4. Remove the self-locking nuts from the upper arm anchor bolts. Remove the upper arm from the vehicle.

Do not disassemble the upper arm. If the ball joint or bushings are faulty, or the upper arm is damaged, the entire upper arm must be replaced.
To install:
Use new self-locking nuts when installing the upper arm and strut.
  1. Install the upper control arm assembly into the strut tower.
  2. Connect the upper ball joint.
  3. Install the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  4. With all four of the vehicle's wheels on the ground, torque the upper control arm nuts to 47 ft. lbs. (65 Nm). Torque the castle nut to 32 ft. lbs. (44 Nm); then, only tighten it enough to install a new cotter pin.
  5. Tighten the wheel nuts to 80 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
  6. Check and adjust the vehicle's front end alignment.
The bushings on the front lower control arms are replaceable on most models.
This procedure requires the use of a press and may be above the skill range of the average driveway enthusiast. It is recommended that this procedure be done by a qualified machine shop if you are not skilled in the proper use of a press.
  1. Remove the lower control arm that is in need of new bushings.
It is recommended that both the left and right lower control arm bushings be replaced at the same time. The vehicles handling may become unstable if there are new bushings on one side of the car and worn ones on the other.
  1. Set up the control arm in a press.
  2. Using a impact socket of the correct length and size, press out the old bushing.
  3. Install the new bushing by slowly using the press to push it into the control arm.
  4. WARNINGExcessive force could cause the bushing to bend or tear so be careful.
  5. Once the bushing is properly seated in the control arm, remove the arm from the press and install it on the vehicle.

SOURCE: Upper and lower ball joint replacement

to remove the axles, remove brake caliper and disc, remove hub assembly, the center hub/axle nut and...(there are i think 3-4 bolts on the back side of the spindle to remove the hub), you may have to force the hub off the spindle with a hammer or air hammer... once the hub is out the axle should slide out of the front differential allowing access to the ball joint nuts for removal...

The ball joints on both 2wd and 4wd upper are pressed in you need to remove snap ring and using a hammer pop out the old one out this is after you seperate the upper arm from the spindle. To install the new ball joint you should use a ball joint press that you can rent at most autoparts shops

Can you show me detail pictures of step by step repair of ball joint and controll arm of 1990 ford thunderbird v6 3.1 automatc

prev.gif next.gif REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Upper ball joints are not replaceable. The upper ball joint is part of the upper control arm bushing joint and is not serviced separately. If the upper ball joints are found to be defective, the entire upper control arm bushing joint assembly must be replaced. Lower Ball Joint INSPECTION
  1. Support the vehicle in normal driving position with ball joints loaded.
  2. Wipe the grease fitting and checking surface, so they are free of dirt and grease. The checking surface is the round boss into which the grease fitting is threaded.
  3. The checking surface should project outside the cover. If the checking surface is inside the cover, replace the lower arm assembly. prev.gif next.gif

To replace upper ball joint do i have to buy new upper control arm

No, you can replace just the upper ball joints. You may have to call a couple parts stores to find one that carries the ball joints without the upper control arm.

How to replace uppe ball joint in Ford Crown

First make an appointment for a front end alignment which will be required after replacing the ball joint. Securely support the vehicle under the lower control arm at the outer end, the end nearest the tire. The upper ball joint is attached to the upper control arm with 2 large nuts. Under the nuts are cams with hex heads for adjusting caster and camber. Mark the position of these cams in a way that will allow you to reinstall them somewhere near the same position. Next remove the outer end of the joint from the steering knuckle an then remove the 2 nuts and both cams from the control arm end. Reinstall and get that alignment asap !

How do i change upper ball joint on a 93 f150 4wd?

Hello there, Most of the upper ball joints on the Fords have to be pressed out and a new one pressed in. You can save your self alot of frustration if you take off the upper control arm and take it and have someone press it such as a local automotive machine shop. you also might be suprised that buying an upper control arm assembly from your ford dealer it comes with a new ball joint installed and in most cases comes with new bushings as well, and it really isn't that much more money. and it will save you alot of aggrevation.

Good Luck and I hope this helps.

How to change upper and lowwer ball joints

the upper ball joints are less complicated , safely jack up trucks front end and support on the proper weight rated jack stands, place jack stands under lower control arm , remove wheel , locate the upper ball joint shaft and caslte nut, remove the cotter pin retainer and disgard for anew cotter pin on assembly., loosen the castle nut but not all the way just yet, some persons like to use a ball joint fork, so if your going back with new joints then by all means use a fork toll to separate the control arm from the ball joint shaft, a couple of solid hits should bust it loose, with the joint loose from its seat go ahead and remove the nut all the way... if yours ball joint is attached to control arm with bolts tehn remove mounting bolts ,R&R old with new joint and reinstall in reverse order of disassembly.

Lower ball joint is more difficult and also more dangerous because of coil spring has stored energy in it's compressed state, you will need a coil spring compression tool, to do this job, it's best on your first time to have supervision from a qualified experienced suspension and steering technician for this reason I will not explain this procedure not knowing your level of expertise...
