A few seconds, or like 2 seconds. Is the security like flashing? The light could be a red dot on the top of the dash. Have the codes read, takes a scanner. Check engine light on when it is running, Also check the codes, code reader will do this. Does the engine just shut off or does it bog down, like sputter till it dies?

Testimonial: "The engine cranks nicely but bogs down and sputters till it dies after a few seconds. Last night I checked to see if any codes appeared and saw this little Wrench. I downloaded a manual for the truck and this is what it said about the Wrench. 'Electronic Throttle control (if equipped): Illuminates when the engine has defaulted to a'limp -home operation.' What does this mean??"

You need the codes read. There are two parts to this that cause the same problem. The TPS, which is the throttle body and the APP, which is the gas pedal(it has a sensor on it). They usually don't kill the engine unless the throttle body or air filter are really dirty. When it goes to limp mode, you can still drive it, but it won't give above 1100 or 1200 RPM's. Won't even shift out of first gear. Usually the APP goes bad first because it is at the floor board. Susceptible to what ever you drag in on your feet. Water, dirt, mud, and snow. When replacing these, check or replace the plug.

Thanks Randy. You were close. Found out it was the MAF Sensor.

How do you get the codes? I just have a regular pickup, no power anything and someone told me my truck dosent have codes.

  • Randy Ohler Dec 09, 2016

There is an OBDII connector under the dash, drivers side. A code reader will pull the codes if you have power to the connector. No power to it, check the cigarette lighter fuse. We have scanners to pull codes even if there is no power to the ODBII.

I changed my 2006 Ford F-150 battery and engin light did not go off

Take it to advance or autozone and have them run the codes on it. If it was on due to a problem then it has to be erased to reset, granted the problem has been fixed.

Ford f-150 will crank but not start or stay running

Look on the throttle body for a little cylinder with an electrical connector on it. Use the handle of screwdriver to give that a few whacks while someone starts the engine after it starts, give a few more whacks. Engine running now? Replace the Intake Air Control motor. or IAC.

2006 Ford F-150 Starting Problem

The ford dealership has my truck now, they said it was the injectors leaking and not holding gas in the fuel rail for start up, and that would also fix the sputtering problem i have. I will know for sure no later than wensday 2/4/09 if that fixes the problem. I will post the results when i get my truck back
