Sounds like the 3800 motor has overheated...? You could seriously damage your motor if you run it hot for to long...Does your inside gauge show "Hot"...could just be a stuck thermostat, but demands being replaced before damaging further...Did you confirm coolant overflow/radiator are full to proper level? Low water can cause this, and serious damage. Hope this helps.

I have a 1972 Pontiac 455 7.5 liter motor in my car.It may run for short time spittering and sputering then die, I may be able to start it again or may not. If i do it just dies.


Sounds as if you have either a fuel system problem or bad ignition. Star with ignition as it is easier to troubleshoot (IMHO) If you are running HEI distributor, have module tested. If running points, examine them carefully and replace points and condenser as needed. For fuel system, use gauge to test fuel pressure. You can also disconnect line to carb and stick it in 16 oz glass bottle, crank engine 10 seconds and see if you pump1/3 to 1/2 full (I think that's the approx amount--been a while since I have done this. If car has been sitting not run for a while fuel in tank may well be bad.

Check the fuel pump, make sure it is putting out proper pressure if not then change the fuel pump

During hot days in summer, car bogs and dies now in spring.


your fuel pump is going.

there was a 10 year unlimited mileage warranty on 2000 focus for this issue, but not sure if 2001 was included. The internal filters in the fuel pump clog and starve the pump. New stlye filters went into prodction but not sure if all of 2001 had the new design.

you could try your tps or throttle position sensor or the air ambent sensor located on the intake it reads air temp coming into motor alot of times when they go bad they run at idle but die somtimes when giving it gas but you could see if you can just unplug the air ambent most vehicles will run with them unhooked

if you haven't checked the ASD relay, make sure its working.
