Question about 2003 Mercury Sable

2 Answers

Driving down the highway and car began to slow down.

When I stepped on the gas it just "revved" the motor. I coasted to a stop. Engine will cut on, however it will not go into gear. I am hoping it is not what I fear - the big "T" word!

Fluid is full, just got off the phone with the service department and YES it is the big "T". 58,000 miles on the car and it goes out. As a driver, what am I doing wrong!!! This is the 3rd transmission that has gone out on me - twice on a 1996 Ford Probe and now on the 2003 Mercury. I think I am going to start walking.

Check the fluid level in the transmission. If it's full, likely the "big T" you are fearing is what has failed...sorry.

I live in Canada where we are NOT entitled to the "lemon law". Ironically, just last week, I was watching a show called "W5" where u can call in and report any problems u have with anything and they will send out an investigator to help you out. Anyway, last weeks show was about a mother of two with the exact same problem you have with your car! Pretty darn scarey indeed as the show did re-inactments of her car stalling down to 0 from 100 km on the highway with two kids in the back seat! Because she lived in the U.S. W5 aired the show and sent an investigater to the dearlership where she bought the car and low and behold they applied the "lemon law" and replaced her car with one of the same value! Good Luck and hope all works out well for you!

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of.(from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones)
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Goodluck!

Defiantly check your timing belt first, there is a little hole on the side of the timing belt cover pop off the plug of the hole and have someone crank it for a second if the camshaft pulley does NOT move then it is definite. but if it does check to see if your getting gas, the gas pumps have known to go out quite often in this vehicle

Sounds to me like a fuel filter/water seperator issue, not enough fuel pressure at higher speeds due to the restriction of fuel but runs when engine is slowed down or idling. Also there is a recall of the 07S57cam position(CMP) sensor that Ford will replace for free! I hope this helps...
