Pull the knob off the switch. Switch shaft has a flat side and knob has a metal retainer clip inside it.
2) Pull the dash panel off by your left knee. Don't remember if there is a retainer nut on front of dash or not. Don't think there is.
3) When you get the dash off I think there is a retainer nut that holds the switch to the front of mounting bracket.
4) Unplug headlight switch electrical.
5) Loosen retainer nut and I think the switch will come out towards the firewall.
I think that dash panel comes off pretty easy. If you look up underneath I think you can tell how it comes off.

Ford E350 (Tioga 24" motorhome). we have a knocking coming from a rod bearing. is it possible to easily remove the sump cover to inspect the problem?

If you truly have a rod/crankshaft bearing that is knocking... "just checking it" will do nothing..
But, yes, you can remove the oil pan and inspect the rotating assembly... GET A QUALIFIED PROFESSIONAL to look at it..

I know this might sound odd but try replacing the ignition switch. I have a 86 c class e 350 and could not get the front fuel pump to run for the longest time. After changing everything else, I decided to change the ignition switch, and believe it or not the front pump came on and started working the way it is supposed to.

E 350 headlights won't come on

If you've narrowed it down that far, it sounds like either a headlight relay (not all vehicles have them, but some do) or the switch itself. It would be worth getting a Haynes manual at this point (they're about $19 at a parts store) - that'll show you locations of any relays as well as wiring diagrams and how to disassemble a lot of the vehicle, in the event you have to replace the switch itself.
