I bought my S40 2004 Volvo back in march. When I bought it u could tell that it once and awhile kinda was rough into second gear. It also has a checkengine light on. Is this bad,Second gearseems worse

Check the PCV System.

check converter is exhaust flowing okay? fuel filter replaced, start here first

probably this problem come with the oil quality.it might be ok if you can plush the hole ATF and refill with proper oil.when not work the valve smoothly in valve body of your gear box,this problem might come.

Sounds like fuel contamination,try a good fuel treatment like lucas,and a product called heet for moister.

I am going to assume it is a 2001 - 2003 S60/V70 with geartronic.

There are several possibilities. One is that the software needs to be upgraded the the Transmissin Control Module. There were some problems with shift flaring and rough shifting.

Second, There are a couple of Technical Journals for hard shifting on those years. It could be the valve body, or a shift spring that has seperated from the base (the shift servo if I remember right) and is causing a hard shift.

Third is that the transmission itself is failing. 2001 was the first year for the 5 speed transmission and hasn't stood up as well as you would think. By 2003 they had worked out all of the bugs and they are once again almost bullet proof (that's of no help to you I know).

If you have a good extended warranty I would take it to a trusted mechanic or the dealer and have them look for said Technical Journals.

I sounds like the TCC solenoid has failed. The stalling problem confirms that the TCC is engaged.

When was the last time you had a trans flush ? Sounds like you could use one. Trans fluid breaks down and doesnt work as well as i did when it was new. There are also sensors that tell it when to change gears could also be a sensor. I would start with a trans flush if it were my car. always try the least expensive first. then if u still have the problem look into calling a trusted transservice and ask them if the have any experiance in Volvo trans. if not fluid my bet is on a sensor in the transmission. As long as you have the instructions to replace the speeometer drive gear go ahead, and do it.

One BIG question I have for you....how do you know that the mileage is not way over what you've been told?...

small tip for the future.......if you ever look at another car for anybody, and the speedometer doesn't work...pass up the car..there is always another one down the road waiting for you.

once hot it presents this problem?..when fluid pressure is lowest is when it is hottest...can you service transmission with new filter and fluid and be sure all lines up to trans cooler at bottom of radiator are clear?
