Hello Shirley Tansek,

Sometimes sensors are ACTUALLY sensing real troubles
(that's why they are there).

If those 500 miles are spent in the TOLL PLAZA staring at the rear of another car for 45 minutes every day... that's not going to measure up... well.

Perhaps it is time to have the engine looked at to see if there actually is SOMETHING WRONG... (it happens).

The system has to see a wide range of conditions before a smog test can be done. On most brands you have to drive at least 50 miles, at various speeds including stop and go, let it idle for 5 - 10 minutes, and run at freeway speed for at least 25 miles. It also has to reach normal operating temp of 195 degrees.

Did this happen all of a sudden? Is this a 4 or 6 cyl. engine? Did you have anything done to the car just prior to this problem or within the last couple of months? How many miles on it? Any aftermarket instillation's?

Just purchased a 1994 Firebird, took it in for a smog test, and it failed at 15MPH, measuring 522 while the max allowed is 483. Car had been in storage for two years with the battery disconnected. Also low...

522 what? Get it registered. Yes it needs to be driven, Yes do an oil change. Add some injector cleaner, I recommend Chevron TECHRON fuel system cleaner. The shop that is checking it most likely knows what it needs to be repaired. If you dont trust them to properly repair it, find a different shop.

2001 Saturn Sl1 wouldn't pass smog because computer won't reset

You will need roughly 5 drive cycles for the obd2 to allow you to pass emissions. If you have no other issues with the car I see no reason to get rid of it.

Here is a link of what constitutes a cycle.
