After heating up the engine, when you shut it off i wont start anymore, what is the defect?

Sometimes plugged cats can severely overheat expanding the catalyst material and blocking normal aspiration. if it starts ok when cool, check cat temps when running with infrared non contact thermometer. bad cats will often display temps in excess of 500 degrees. cats are built into manifolds on the six cylinders, one front one rear. sometimes heat shields prevent a good measurement.

99 Mercury Cougar cat glowing red. Replaced thinking it was plugged and still glowing cherry red with exhaust unhooked.

Im guessing the ck engine light is on? Something is dumping gas and heating up cat, you need to check have scanner hooked up and engine data looked at...look at long and short fuel trim, tis will tell you what's going on or at least give you a direction to go.I wouldn't drive it, gonna ruin new cat

My car just cut off, when try to restart it spits back thru breather ,runs a little but willnot accelerate, also when it does finally start, cataylic converter gets cherry red

the cherry red catalytic converter is the sign of a complete blocked cat and needs immediately replacement. The starting problems you have are due to this situation. Change the cat and you will see improvement.

Catalytic converter stopped up. Pipes got red hot. Replaced Cat. Conv. car runs good, then started random misfires, pipes got red hot again. What is exhaust part that is downstream of Cat. Conv. could it...

If the exhaust system was plugged the engine wont run, normally. It will start and idle until the back pressure is such that it can't take in more air/fuel mixture and then stall.

After the converter, there may be a resonator, and then the muffler. Is any exhaust flowing out of the tail pipe? You might try hooking up a scanner and see what your oxygen sensor(s) is/are doing.
Also, scan the MAF(mass air flow) sensor assembly.
Sound like the engine can't breathe, and its getting to much fuel.

box??? if it is,, is it full of "atf" ( red oil) and could it be slipping??? if its a cluch type (stick shift) is the cluch slipping,,, are the drakes binding up on you? try pushing the car with no brakes on and out of gear! if its dam heavy there binding up on you? if it rools freely there ok!
ps,,, cats are a big con anyhow, they dont work till they reach over 70 degrees farenhight and they also soke up 15% of engine power so the oil compenys get more of your hard earnd cash!!!! now can you see the con bit? and as for the "saving the world bit????"
