O2 sensor don't kill the engine. Lower gas mileage, yes. You don't enough info, like how long it takes or how far and how fast. I would be looking at the fuel side. Replace the fuel filter first. Cheap fix. Just a note. Clogged fuel filters usually take out the fuel pump also.

Testimonial: "The truck does not start at all it tries, then it shutters and nothing, sort of dieseling."

Check how hot it is getting. Dieseling on gas engines is from overheating.

Lots of black smoke out the exhaust? Replace the engine coolant temperature(ECT) sensor. Older GM's like in the 90's were real susceptible to ECM dumping fuel for bad ECT sensors. The ECM would read the ECT at -40 degrees. And dump lots of fuel in. A scanner will tell you right off. If this is the problem, replace the ECT and you should change the spark plugs also, they are gas fouled out. A cold start and dieseling does happen unless there is way to much fuel. It will have the black smoke or a real strong smell of fuel at the tail pipe.

Sometimes o2 sensors can block the engine. It may have triggered the fuel cutoff. Check your manual for location of the cutoff switch and try to reset it. It may keep it going long enough to get sensor replaced or at least checked out.

1997 chevy pick up, 4.3 Ltr. Bucks HARD when driving. Was told it needs Higher octane gas, didn't work. Acts like it's got hickups! Any help ?

Check your plug wires, and possibly distributor cap and rotor-If you look at the wires closely you may see a date stamped on them i.e. '98' which certainly would deserve being retired. Your symptoms are classic secondary ignition (wires and cap) and for less than $100 and a half hour to one hour's work will have it running like new again.

1997 chevy s-10 6cyl won't start with new battery. Engine turns, but it won't crank.

crank no start? I would check for fuel pressure on these models, the fuel pump module is quite often repalced. Then I would check ignition cap and rotor. Cap get white with corrosion and rotor green.

1997 chevy astro van has poor starting problems after it sits all

hello ralph...check the coolant temp sensor. It acts as a choke to richen fuel mixture when cold. If it doesn't work correctly, hard starting will occur. Once engine reaches operating temp, the problem is usually non-existent. also....
Worn spark plugs.
Fouled spark plugs.
Worn distributor cap and rotor.
Old ignition wires.
Low engine coolant level.
Faulty MAP sensor...any of these will effect cold starting....

Good luck...i hope this helps.
