If diesel and turbo , check turbo operation of for holes in the intercooler
if turbo or naturally aspirated check/ replace injector tips as black smoke indicators squirting and not atomizing
if petrol check for excessive fuel pressure, faulty injectors , leaking injector seal
regardless of petrol or diesel --black smoke indicates incorrect air / fuel ratio ( too much fuel) so injectors, intercooler, bad turbo or blocked air cleaner are all candidates for the fault

I have a 1992 Nissan Terrano that has been submerged. Since then I have drained all the water from the fuel tank, primer pump and the diesel pump and lines. There seems to be NO power at the dash and...

the clue is in the colour of the smoke , if it turns white then you still have water in the engine , fuel system etc somewhere , have you at the least change the engine oil ? i would advise also getting the tank pump changed ,and then the electrics would seem to be affected so remove what you can and spray with something like WD 40 to dispel the water , good luck keep me posted

I had the same problem, the drains were clean and it happened to be where the glass meets the seal on top, it killed my motor as there was moisture all the time. I did buy black silicone from screw-fix and its fixed. NO MORE LEAKING.

Terrano gearbox keeps jumping out of overdrive and

Nissan Terrano's have an Electronic Computer that controls the gearbox. It is hidden behind the left hand rear Speaker box, right hard up against the rear seat back rest. This system controls all functions regarding the gearbox and it's rev rates. If your vehicle is shifting back on long drives then it is possible that the computer sees any slight increase in revs as a desire to "Kickback" the gearbox to a lower gearing, hence it dropping out of overdrive. Unfortunately a gearbox specialist with a computer "Plug-in" is needed to fix this, but it is fixable. This problem should not be too expensive in comparison with a new gearbox.
