Question about 1997 Honda Prelude

Engine dies while driving

I have a honda prelude "S" type 97 2door. just lately it dies when I'm driving, I have to pull over and turn the ignition off, wait a couple of minutes, then turn the ignition on and away she goes. The only thing that I notice is that this seems to happen when I have low air in my tyres, or when I do a tyre change with those horrible japanese spares that come with it. is this my imagination, or could it possibly be something else, either diagnostic or mechanical.

Start your car and shake your key while on and car parked, does your engine die?? When the vehicle stalls while in motion does your speedometer go to zero?? are some of the lights on the instrument panel not lit when the vehicle stalls?? If yes is the answer to any of these questions, its a possible faulty ignition switch!! The switch's internal contacts are severely corroded or arched. Therefore intermitted power failure to vital engine electrical components cause engine shutdown while in operation. The problem usually increases in Hotter weather. As for your tires, they may cause this due to increased road vibration causing the switch to fail more frequently. Call your local honda dealer with your VIN# at hand for info on this recall and if your vehicle has been repaired!! They may repair it for free. If not, the switches range from $45-$95. Hopefully this helps

I had the same exact model, and same exact problem....Does your speedometer go to zero when the vehicle stalls while moving?? Are Some of the lights on the instrument panel "not lit" when the car stalls?? You may also shake the key while the engine is on and in the park position, does the car die?? If yes to any of these questions, it has a faulty ignition switch(recalled in 2002-all Hondas 97-02 1.3+mil vehicles affected). The switch's internal electrical contacts are arched or severely worn due to manufacture defect. Therefore vital engine electrical components encounter power failure and causing the car to stall while in operation and may cause a crash. This will increase in hot weather. As for the low tires or spare dummy tires, they increase road vibration and possibly cause the ignition switch to shake and fail. Call your local Honda dealer with your VIN# at hand, check if your vehicle has been part of this recall. Or replace the switch. Hopefully this helps

Awesome! Was stranded on the side of the road and googled found your answer in like 2 min. Put a climbers clip on my key ring today and live on a very bumpy road. Took off the clip and (raised my steering wheel a bit) shook the key a bit and it started right up and drove fine. THANK!

once left it would start.
this had a high resistance in a contact for the imoberlizer.
the after market unit was so small and plug and pins were not fit for half the amps they had to do.

All electronic accessories work when key is in

test power at the starter's power wire. If there is voltage, replace starter. If there is no power, check fuses/relays, if those are fine, check ignition switch (there is a recall on this since 2002). Typical symtoms of ignition switch failure on these vehicles include: Some warning lights not lit when key is turned to ON (ABS, battery, check engine, oil light etc.), Intermitted hard start/No start, stalling while driving, intermitted guage failure. If it is an ignition switch failure, call your local honda dealer for possible free repair under the recall(have your VIN# at hand). hopefully this helps

My 90 prelude won't turn off/ has new ign. Cylinder and switch.

ignition switch is adjusted wrong loosen the bolts slide it away from stering wheel. if you still have problem make sure the rod for switch is moving freely with switch.if not that check to make sure you have right switch,if correct sound like you have some damaged wires.

The only way to For sure fix this is to have a Mechanic run a Diagnostic Check on the Entire car to locate the Problem. Fixing small things here and there will not get you anywhere with this Honda.

Engine dies

this sounds like a fuel pump issue. It could be the pump, or it could be the Master Relay.

93 prelude starting problems

I had a similar problem on my 93 Prelude. Apparently the original ignition module has a high plastic content. This doesnt do well with heat obviously. I had the ignition replaced with an aftemarket part that did not use as much plastic in its pieces and it fixed the problem.
