What year and engine size ! How many wires do you have ? Should just be large gage red battery cable and maybe some fusible links that hook up to same terminal as the battery cable , and a smaller gage wire that goes on the S terminal on the starter solenoid !

SOURCE: Pontiac Montana starting problem

All 4 power wires go together on the large center stud on the solenoid.
The purple wire goes on the small stud.
The purple wire supplys the trigger signal when the key is turned to the start position.Since your solenoid is clicking when the key is turned to start this is working properly.
I would check battery connections and then check power connections on solenoid again.Make sure all connections are clean and tight.

SOURCE: Changing the starter solenoid on a 2000 Pontiac Montana

On your van the solenoid is attached to the starter. If you can get a solenoid separate (i don't know if you can) then you will need to take the starter off and remove the solenoid (2 screws holding it on) and the wires (on red and one black i believe) pay attention to which wire goes where because you don't want to reverse it on the new solenoid.

SOURCE: STARTER MOTOR WIRING

The wires with the large loops go on the big terminal. The purple wire likely is the one with the smaller loop that goes on the right terminal (facing the solenoid). That is ith trigger wire from the ignition key.Do not permit the wires from either terminals to touch.

could have faulty starter or starter solenoid.hook test light make you a test light with longer wires and 12 volt bulb with socket go junk yard find good bulb with socket.hook test light to starter and see if test light lights up if so your starter or starter solenoid has a open winding. if test light dont light up could have blowed fuse to transmission neutral switch or neutral switch could be bad.try to start vechicle in neutral if vechicle starts your transmission neutral switch out of adjustment or neutral switch faulty check make sure wires going to neutral switch is damaged.

I have a 2002 montana idles fine after 2000 rpm starts to misfire and pop into intake and eventually the baterry light comes on. Checked voltage at idle is 14.2, after it starts to misfire voltage spikes...

I was going to say its a bad voltage regulator. but you put on a new alternator. so check the battery cables carefully to be sure there clean and tight., and also the wire from alternator to battery. and check all engine to body grounds. One is to clean/check all connections.
Your voltage regulator will have a smaller wire that hooks to the battery cable at some point, usually the starter relay (solenoid),
Make sure that connection is SECURE.

have a good day ! hope this steers you in the right way.

Where can I find electrical schema for the radio of a 2002 pontiac Montana, I want to replace the radio by a Kenwood and I don't know which wires are for the speakers? Thanks for your help. Yves

If you go to your local audio shop, you can get a plug adapter. This will hook up to the back of the new radio, and hook to the cars factory system. You can also order the plug on line. It will save you time and hassle. Also should you ever up grade the system, you don't have to worry about splicing more wiring. hope this helps

2006 Pontiac Montana wont start after replacing battery. Engine cranks as soon a key is moved from off, then continue to crank even after removing the key.

Sounds like your starter solenoid is stuck in the on position if you can get down there and have some one hook the battery on, hit the starter with a hammer some time this will disengage the starter.
