2003 Grand Marquis digital speedo only reads "0". All other displays read correctly. Could it be the speed control? If so, where exactly is it located?

The speedometer provides speed information based on a speed/distance pulse signal from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). The VSS is mounted on the speedometer driven gear in the transmission.
or the gauge is bad .

  • The speedometer/odometer is inoperative
  • CJB fuse 14 (10A).
  • Vehicle speed sensor (VSS).
  • Circuitry.
  • Instrument cluster.
  • Go To Pinpoint Test E .
PINPOINT TEST E: THE SPEEDOMETER/ODOMETER IS INOPERATIVE CAUTION: Use the correct probe adaptor(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adaptor(s) may damage the connector.
CONDITIONS DETAILS/RESULTS/ACTIONS E1 CHECK VSS SPEED SIGNAL BETWEEN CIRCUITS 679 (GY/BK) AND CIRCUIT 676 (PK/OG)
VSS C1088
Raise the drive wheels off the ground. While rotating the driveshaft, measure the AC voltage between the VSS C1088 pin 1, circuit 679 (GY/BK), component side and the VSS C1088 pin 2, circuit 676 (PK/OG), component side.
  • Is the voltage between 1.3 volts AC to 6.1 volts AC?
Yes GO to E2 .

No CHECK and INSPECT the speedometer drive gear. INSTALL a new VSS if the speedometer drive gear is OK. TEST the system for normal operation E2 CHECK CIRCUIT 679 (GY/BK) AND CIRCUIT 676 (PK/OG) BETWEEN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND THE VSS

    Instrument Cluster C220b

Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220b pin 12, circuit 679 (GY/BK), harness side and the VSS C1088 pin 1, circuit 679 (GY/BK), harness side; and between the instrument cluster C220b pin 12, circuit 679 (GY/BK), harness side and ground.

Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220b pin 8, circuit 676 (PK/OG), harness side and the VSS C1088 pin 2, circuit 676 (PK/OG), harness side; and between the instrument cluster C220b pin 8, circuit 676 (PK/OG), harness side and ground.

Are the resistances less than 5 ohms between the instrument cluster and the VSS; and greater than 10,000 ohms between the instrument cluster and ground?
    Yes
    GO to E3 .

    No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
E3 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
    Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
    Check for:
    corrosion
    pushed-out pins

Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present?
    Yes
INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to Instrument Cluster in this section. REPEAT the instrument cluster self-test.

    No
The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

02 Silverado 1500 speedo reads 100 mph

When does it read 100 mph ? sitting still , all the time etc.... ? The speedometer is controlled by a step motor inside the instrument cluster , step motor is controlled by a microprocessor inside instrument cluster , which get's the speed info from the PCM - engine computer over the vehicle class 2 serial data network . The VSS - vehicle speed sensor is a input to the PCM , this is what the PCM uses to calculate the vehicle speed .

Speedometer
The IPC displays the vehicle speed based on the vehicle speed signal from the PCM. The PCM converts the data from the vehicle speed sensor to a 4000 pulses/mile signal. The IPC uses the vehicle speed signal circuit from the PCM in order to calculate the vehicle speed. The speedometer defaults to 0 km/h (0 mph) if a malfunction in the vehicle speed signal circuit exists.

Having the vehicle hooked up to factory scan tool can take all the guess work out of a diagnoses like this .

Replaced input and output speed sensors for erratic speedometer. Now the speedometer remains at 0. Anyone have a suggestion on what else could be wrong?

input and out put speed sensors tell the TCM and the ECM the difference between engine rpms and transmission input roms so that the correct gear ratio can be selected
A speedo sensor reads the out put shaft (drive line ) shaft and refers to road speed for speed and odometer readings and to calculate the fuel consumption rate
it is possible that you have replaced the wrong sensor
Talk with an accredited transmission specialist shop and have the problem diagnosed

Its probably going to be the fan resistor. Most times it is on top of the fan itself but could be elsewhere behind dash. 90% sure thats your prob though.

The speedometer on my 1994 grand marquis reads too high

Hello, If there was any change in tires, that can contribute to speedometer error. If you have a Digital dash on your Mercury, sometimes the Alternator can affect the accuracy of the digital gauges.

You can get a free scan and charging system test at Autozone, Advance, and Oreillys autoparts stores. If you do not find any problems with the above items, then it is possible to have your Speedo recalibrated.

Look online for specialty shops in your area, sometimes Tire stores have the equipment. If this is a new vehicle to you, someone may have put in the wrong size speedometer gear before you bought it.

I hope these suggestions help you.

Believe it or not I had to replace an alternator in my Lincoln with a digital dash. It had a speedo giving crazy readings too.

You can get a free scan at Autozone or Oreillys to check the Alternator and the rest of your car. It may solve your O/D problems too. There is a speed sensor in some of the rear axles. It could be loose and cause the same problems.
