I guess the rear axle center NUT ? is it? not lug nuts..
I'd not guess that, ever.
if it is a solid bearing do it up as tight as you can.if it is a tapered bearing do it up untill the nut is touching the bearing check the hub for play if you have got play do the nut up a bit more until the play is gone in the hub.make sure you do not over tighten the bearing or the wheel will not turn freely.the wheel needs to spin with no drag.
