Question about 1999 Buick Century

2 Answers

1996 Buick Century- When accelerating from stop, engine revs but car won't move in Drive. Once up to 30mph in another gear (2nd, etc) will move in Drive. Problem started with stall-like shaking during accelerating from stop. Also, loud revving noise from 45mph to levelling off at 60mph. Seems like car wants to continue running even when I stop accelerating. I am able to coast at full speed for approx. 1/10 mi. Breaks checked-fine. Is it transmission or fuel line issue?

Thank you for the quick response. I was afraid of that being the case. I was hoping to rule it out because I had no problems in other gears.

Low on fluid!
transmission pump failing or converter loose or cracked drive plate where converter bolts up to
could be slipping clutches or bands
or even the control module
get it to a workshop asap!
preferaly dont flat tow it or drive it as your only doing more damage
Cheers Rob.

You have a transmission that is slipping, it is going to need a teardown and overhaul.

What can I do to save gas on my 1988 Buick Century

Drive slowly, don't over rev the engine if you don;t need to.
Check the tyre pressures also.
Take anything out of the car that you don;t need with you as more weight in the car equals more fuel used to move.
Finally, any roof bars or boxes on the outside that don't need to be there can be take off, this will help with aero.

Other tips might be to cruise behind another vehicle on the motorway, just not too close and also don;t bother with cruise control as this tends to use more fuel than a careful accelerator foot.
Also keep your engine serviced and if possible run some engine cleaner through the system. Airfilter needs to be clean too or it will be starved of air and need more revs to work

When my buick century 1995 is cold it will start but won't rev up. once it is hot it runs okay

Number of possibilities. See if you have any diagnostic codes stored. Could be throttle position sensor, coolant temp. sensor, hard to say. I would start with the codes. Does it start easy when warmed up, and run good? Boy, I just don't know.

I have a problem with my gear box i have a jeep grand cherokee

Your transmission apparently is not downshifting properly. From your description, it sounds as though it is in 2nd or 3rd gear, which is why it is slow to accelerate. When you shift into 1st, it is starting off in 1st gear as it should. You probably should have a transmission shop check it out. Check engine light on?
