Open Question

Problem: both the pump and heater are working but when the pump is running the heater will not turn on. Is sit a sensor? and if so can u bypass this?

Caution, Make sure you did not disable the Inertia sensor by bypassing the power feed. Ford products use this system to prevent fires in an accident.

Hope you checked Inertia as possible cause for cutout in first place, they can be reset with button push. Other Manufacturers do not use this system. Yours should be behind a kickpanel or in the rear cargo area, behind a panel.

Check to ensure fans are getting enough amperage to run at proper speed. turning your heat on removes heat form the engine and puts it into the passenger compartment. It could be possible that a sensor on the fan is not allowing the fans to spin fast enough or the fans may have a sensor which controls the speed of the fan to coincide with the heat that needs to be removed. Generally, your thermostat needle should sit just slightly below half. Do not run engine anywhere near the red zone as damage can result

Your heater core has gone bad. You will need to replace it, or bypass it by running a bypass hoze across the water pump.

1994 Toyota 4Runner Overheating

I had the same problem - my 95 4Runner would overheat in 4WD only, and coolant would bubble out and spill over.

The problem turned out to be with the rear heater tubes and the fan clutch - my mechanic bypassed the rear heater tubes and I have no more problems. Not exactly sure why this helped. To replace the rear heater tubes, it would've cost $325, but to bypass cost $75. Most people don't even really use the heat in the back seat.

The second part of the problem, and most important, was the fan clutch needed to be replaced. At low speeds, it wasn't kicking in when it should have been, only working at higher speeds. Once I replaced the fan clutch and the bypassed the rear heater tubes, all has been well.

the fuel pump could actually be malfunctioning. and the reason that you are able to restart and drive again is because when you turn the key on it is allowing the fuel pump to pressureize your system. but while the fuel pump is continuasly running it is loosing the fuel pressure. this is common on the cheap fuel pumps. i am not sure about were you got the fuel pump from but in all of my experiances with this problem i find that the fuel pumps have been boughten at a napa store.
i hope this helps you out.
and you could attach a fuel pressure gauge on to the fuel rail and start the car and watch the pressure to see if it is droping.

If you want to bypass the heater core, easiest was is to remove both hoses from the heater core, get a hose connector and 2 hose clamps.

Other than that, you could buy a few feet of some heater hose at your local auto parts store, and go from the water pump to the thermostat housing (although this would bypass your temerature sensors, would probablly cause a check engine light, and may prevent your cooling fan from working properly).

I don't see any parts store anywhere offering a "single" bypass hose, nor have I heard of one for this vehicle. If you do need to bypass it, your solution is above.

Cooling system requires burp.

A large air pocket can sometimes be tricky to get rid of. The easiest way is to jack the front end up in the air with the wheels off the ground and support with jack stands, remove the radiator cap(make sure engine is cool) and allow to sit over night in this condition. The elevated front end will allow the air pocket to move to the most highest point and then escaping out the top of the radiator, after doing this procedure make sure to inspect coolant level in radiator and overflow reservoir and top off as needed.

fan will only run when engine is hot,check its working ???if not check the relay connections.if and when you get the fan working see what happens,if it persists then bypass and run fan continuosly ,,see what happens if it still happens with fan on all the time then two possibilitys,,,,,head gasket or plastic impeller on water pump sliding on shaft and not turning ....
