Just Bought a 1990 Volvo 240GL Auto 2L

I have just bought a 1990 Volvo 240GL Auto with 160,000 on the clock and no service history. It seems in very good nick tho!

I am having the car fully serviced tomorrow but I am wondering If I need a replacement timing belt?

Will mt engine be ruined if it does fail?

It depends upon the number of valves, whether your engine will be ruined. An 8 - valve head is a non-interference, and won't be damaged. The 16 - valve DOHC head IS interference, and will definitly be damaged. However, whether it is interference or not, The timing belt should always be replaced when a car is purchased with no records. I'd also suggest getting a new timing belt tensioner assembly, as they tend to wear out at high mileage.

Hallo Markmac945,

I've been a Volvo Service worker for about a year and seen lot of these Volvo's. It's true that if the timingsbelt snaps the engine wil be ruined. It would be wise (seen that the service history isn't there) to change the belt if your not sure it happend. I life in the Netherland and because we have cars with a KM-dile, i don't know if this is any help but; timings belts in Europe sould be changed at 120.000 KM. How manny miles that is, well I just don't know. The engine in your Volvo is an B21 or B23. Both timing belts have to be changed at 120.000KM. But for the price (being a easy timing belt change) I sure change the timing belt. Than you'll be sure that everything is in good order.

Hello, I recently bought a 1990 Toyota Celica 4cyl 5spd manual. The clock and cigarette lighter worked when I bought it but days later they both stopped working, I have tried looking at the fuses but...

same thing with mine. except the clock only worked once. i took it out and bought another one out of a junkyard. these cars aren't easy to find in junkyards, mainly because they are invincible, but you could try checking around.

Chevrolet captiva 2.0 lt poor mpg captiva has

I also have a Chevy Captiva 2L Diesel but with the auto box. The MPG on that one is abysmally bad! I bought it a few weeks ago with just under 30K miles on the clock (2007 model), and it returns around 230 miles on a full tank! That's around 17 MPG and probably on par with a Hummer!!
I was expecting the auto box to be less efficient than the manual of course but not to consume twice as much. Anyone out there with any ideas as to why this could be? I was actually already checking under the car to see if it loses fuel... We live in the suburbs and our trips can be considered a mix of urban and extra urban (they are admittedly on the short side and from a cold winter start; still, this doesn't justify the extremely low MPG). The car seems adequately powered for its weight and considering the small'ish engine and auto box.
Thanks!

Check the connectors to the temperaure sensor, I think it has been crossed with the knock sensor. I had an earlier model volvo with same problem it was like that since I bought it. I found out somebody crossed the temperature sensor with the knock sensor. It took me a while to figure it out. I had to use an schematic diagram.
