Question about Jeep Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

1998 jeep grand Cherokee limited 5.9

Transmission is acting up but not sure it is a sensor or the trans itself. it starts and squeals on and off, and sometimes when i put it in gear it'll shut off or sound like it grinds gears. please help my local said he needs to rebuild the whole trans but i think other wise.

I suspect based on your description that you have a failed planetary gear set, it will lock up soon if you continue to drive it, have it rebuilt or buy an exchange transmission.

How do i install a engine speed sensor on my 1998 jeep grand cherokee loredo 4.0

Ther are more than one type of speed sensor for jeeps....I am chrysler jeep tech...there are 2 speed sensors on the trans and also speed sensors at the wheels (IF IT HAS ABS)...Normally the engine speed is done by an IAC Motor...If you are meaning idle...Can you send more information....
Also you may have a vacum leak..........You have an Input speed sensor and an output speed sensor ....Do you know exactly which it is ....Both are at transmission /If 4 wheel drive see transfer case also.I have the manual at my fingertips and will be glad to assist you with any problems............................I can help................metalpoet

I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2 v8. Engine was lugging check engine light came on as engine quit. Pulled over turned off the key and it restarted and ran fine. Went to Auto ZOne they said...

Hello there, One of the problems Jeeps do have is Transmissions. It is very typical of the sensors and solonoid packs to go bad, Also Jeeps as well have well know problems with the computer causing transmission issues as well.

I suggest taking it to a shop other than a parts store they are great for basic info but a repair shop can actually look at what each sensor is doing in real time.

You are on the right track and I would most definetly address this asap rather than causing internal transmission problems.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

Is the overdrive solenoid on a 95 JGC accessible, externally?

no. its part of the valve body inside of the transmission. you would need to drain and remove the transmission oil pan and then remove the valve body. Best left to a transmission shop or reputable repair center.
