On drivers side next to linkage is a 3 pin connector neutral safety switch just behind it on top of transmission is a rectangular plug this is for internal shift solenoids the 2 pin at rear of transmission output shaft speed sensor.

Assuming it is an automatic trans, the neutral safety switch may have failed. The switch prevents you from cranking the engine in drive or reverse.

To clarify - the engine cranks then starts.
If it won't crank in any gear, I would check the neutral safety switch first.
You can also jumper the starter solenoid to make sure the starter will crank the engine manually without the circuit from the key switch.

CHECK MAKE SURE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH FUSE OR NEUTRAL SAFETY FUSE HAS BLOWN.IF ALL IS GOOD.PROBLEM IS IN MANUAL SHIFT CABLE.OR THE TRANSMISSION RANGE SWITCH OR NEUTRAL SWITCH IS BAD.
