Problem with fuel tank filling. Pump nozzle shuts off

Problem with gas tank filling. Gas pump nozzle inserted into Ford Contour shuts off continuously no matter how it is inserted, angled or how gradually it is squeezed. The problem happens at all service stations. Can't see any blockage. Very annoying as it takes up to 15 minutes to fill tank. Help is appreciated. Thx.

Get the filler hose checked out as it may have a spring inside it to hold its shape or something has been dropped inside restricting it!

This is a known difficulty with Ford Contours. At the end of the filler hose where it goes into the tank, there is a "anti-splashback" valve. It is supposed to keep fuel from surging back up the hose while driving. Unfortunately, the plastic material the flapper valve is made of begins to swell after a time due to alcohol in the gasoline these days. This causes the valve to stick, restricting the flow of gas into the tank while filling it, and the back pressure makes the pump nozzle shut off.
The only way to really fix the problem is to empty the tank, drop it from the car, remove the fuel level sending unit/fuel pump assembly from the top of the tank, and reach in and remove the flapper valve. Then reinstall everything. It's a pain, and unless you are very experienced with this kind of work and have a suitable facility, I would recommend strongly that you take it to a qualified shop.

Sadly, I think this is less to do with the car, than it is the pump nozzle design.

In digging for this problem, which I too am having, I see all sorts of different makes, and models and years. You cannot convince me that it is all these cars.

Rather I think it is because they have changed the shape of the nozzle, so that it is straighter now.

Gas tank will not fill up on 2001 ford expedition

Gas as in gasoline or gas as in LPG gas? If its petrol, the fuel sender may be out of adjustment. (Usually means a new sender) If its LPG, the fuel stations are set to automatically shut off at 80% full. The gas tank will never actually be full to the brim but the gauge should be showing full if the gas nozzle keeps shutting off. Have a look on the LPG tank itself, they have a little gauge on them which shows how full it is. I have 2 tanks on my car , when "full" or when the pump shuts down, the tank gauges show just under full but the gauge on the cars dash shows full (2005 BA Ford)

When putting gas in my 2004 Kia amanit the fuel nozzle kicks off. How do I locate and fix the problem

HI Bridgette,

Due to the different shapes of fuel tank filler necks in cars & trucks, it may be necessary to vary one or more things to allow fuel to flow uninterrupted until the tank is really full.

The main problem can come from the new "vapor recovery" gasoline pumps. These pumps and hoses actually recover gasoline fumes from your tank as the liquid gasoline displaces the air / fumes in the tank is it is being filled. If gasoline flow is started at full blast, it can splash back slightly, causing liquid to be pulled back by the pump - so it shuts off. So, start with a slow rate of filling and gradually increase flow rate to maximum over 5 to 10 seconds. If it still shuts off, try some of the suggestions below.

First, don't fill at maximum flow rate from the pump - that is, don't set the nozzle for wide open. Select one of the other "latches" on the handle instead of the fastest flow and let the tank fill entirely at this rate.

Second, you should experiment a bit with the length of nozzle that you push into the tank's filler neck. If you push it in too far or too little, the pump nozzle can do what you're describing.

Third, try twisting the nozzle slightly so that it doesn't hang straight downward - a little to the left or right may provide a solution.

Lastly, try a different gas station. Their pumps may not be so picky with your tank's filler neck.

Good luck!

I can no longer pump gas into tank continuously. The filler backs up and shuts off fuel even when using gas pump manually.

You may have a problem with the fuel tank vent valve. This lets air into the tank as you use fuel and allows air out of the tank as you refill with fuel. If the valve is plugged or stuck shut the fuel nozzle will kick off as you try to refill the tank because the fuel can't get through the fill neck and into the tank as fast as it's being pumped in and will back up high enough to kick the nozzle off. Hope this helps and good luck!

Can't get gas into my 2002 Hyundai Accent.

The reason the gas station pump shuts off is when the fuel reaches the tip of the gas nozzle, so when you are filling your car and the gas nozzle (gas stations pipe) keeps shutting off it means that the pipe that runs to the gas tank is not open completely, what happens is when you pump the gas in the car the supply pipe from the gas tank opening to the tank fills up quickly and this causes the gas station pipe nozzle to shut off, have some body take down the gas tank and have a look at the gas tank opening and also gas supply pipe that runs from the gas filler opening ( on the car body) to the gas tank. Have a look at it and please don't forget to rate the answer if it was helpful, thanks!

Ford never did, in 100 years, learn how to make a gas tank. I have an 05 Mustang that does the same thing. What I do, is turn the nozzle completely upside down in the filler cap, and it works fine. You may have to experiment a little, pull it out a bit or what ever, but the handle up works for most.

Fuel Tank

I have had this problem. For me it's usually when the tank is really empty. I worked at a gas station and at times, I'd have to replace the gas nozzles when they wouldn't kick off correctly.. I suspect the problem is that the gas nozzle is picking up more gasoline fumes that are being displaced in the tank and venting thru the fuel filler opening. The gas nozzle detects enough gasoline vapors with it's sensor to shut-off the nozzle. One can slightly adjust the nozzle in the fuel filler opening (or wait a few additional seconds giving time for the fuel vapors to exit the fuel tank)) and it works great.. I do not believe it is a problem with the Blazer. It's a combination of the gas nozzle and the amount of vapor escaping the filler opening with the displacement of vapor in the gas tank. I've had this happen in my Ford Contour.
I hope this helps others.
