Question about 2001 Cadillac DeVille

2 Answers

2001 Cadillac Deville with 44,000 miles on it. A few weeks ago the "traction control" light went on, and stayed on. An hour or so later all of the panel readings and the radio went dead, but the engine was OK and the driving was not effected. This would last for a day or two and then return to normal. That occurred twice. About a week later, I was stopped on a car ferry. When I tried to start the car to get off, everything was dead except for the radio. A tow truck driver merely touched the battery terminals with his charger and everything returned to normal. I then drove 250 miles to get home. I did not have time to get it checked the next day, but drove 60 miles to a meeting. I was halfway there when the engine completely shut down as I was cruising at 70 miles an hour. Everything was dead except the radio. As before, as soon as a battery charger was applied, all was well. I then drove to a Cadillac dealer who checked everything and found nothing wrong. I then drove the car for three days without incident. Then when I went to start it in the morning, all I got was a light that said "Service Security System". The engine was dead. I tried it again the next morning, and the engine made weak attempts at turning over. Today nothing worked, but a light that said "Service Engine Soon".

I would just be more comfortable getting another opinion that might possibly be different or better. After getting the second opinion, I will go get the car serviced.

    Thank you.

The two solutions are different, and I have no way of dtermining at this point which one applies. I should know after the ar is checked out again.

But I do want to make a payment, so is there any way you can split the single charge (no pun intended) between the two contributors?

    Thanks, John MacDonald

You need to have the charging system and the battery tested again, this sounds like a poor connection inside the battery or a poor connection at the power distribution box under the hood, otr a defective voltage regulator diode in the alternator, low voltage causes the electronic control modules like the BCM (body control module) to go nuts and generate all kinds of weird symptom's. so do the flowing:
1. Have the battery cables cleaned and the battery load tested, replace and clean as necessary
2. Have the alternator tested for possible defective diode causing voltage spikes.
3. Have the battery connection to the Power Distribution box under the hood checked for corrosion or possible loose connections.
I suspect you have a defective battery or corroded terminals but do the tests to verify this, as far as the dealer checking this before if the symptoms were no showing the problem can be very hard to track down.

It looks like a wiring problem that comes and go with car vibration, or a faulty anti theft system kicking in erratically.

The problem with this kind of faults is that the mechanic can actually find the fault when the problem occurrs.

To start I suggest taking the car to a mechanic or to a car electrician when the problem is there, for example now that you have Service Engine message on display.
The mechanic will scan the ECU (car computer) to see if any fault code is stored in there.

If nothing is found, the next step could be excluding the car security system for few days, to check if the problem is related to a bad car alarm module.

If the problem persists without car alarm on , then it can be a wiring or a faulty ECU(car computer module), in that case better going to a car electrician to test the whole car wiring, and then eventually replace the computer.

Regards

Why does my ABS light stays on and sometimes i get a vibration in the brake petal causing my 2002 Cadillac escalade not wanting to stop?

Sounds like a fault with the Antilock Braking System. The vibration in the pedal is the ABS working. With your foot on the brake pedal, it releases and re-applies the brakes to stop a skid from the wheels locking up. You need professional service for brakes.

Seems to be a known issue on all Cadillac and requires the ABS module to be replaced.

Whenever this warning or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating that the systems control module has detected a fault, it then disables the system as long as the light is on. You must now have the dealer hook up a special electronic diagnostic tool and "scan" the system for the fault code that is stored for the problem(s)

I have a 2002 Cadillac Deville and a few weeks ago three lights came on at once: Traction Control, ABS and Brake light are all on in my dash. Did something get disconnected? How can I repair this?

have the code pulled from the computer to find out what set the lights on.the traction control works off of the abs sytem and so if theres a problem its not uncommone for both lights to come on.the brake light and abs lights on at the same time means there is a possible serious problem

I have a 2001 Cadillac Deville with the ABS and Traction Control light stay on. What is the problem. Could I reset the ABS and Traction Control light? If so how could I reset ? Larry

Hello: There are many things that will cause the lights to come on. You can check the brake fluid if it is low that will cause the light to come on. you can clear the code with a up scale scanner but if the problem is not corrected the light will come back on.

2001 Cadillac Deville problems starting

I have had the same problem and I have come to the conclusion it is the security system. After 3 minutes the car will start so there is nothing wrong with the battery or starter. I have had it to the dealer a few times and they cannot solve it. It may be the locks on the doors and they may not be resetting properly. I have learned to live with it.
