2002 Honda Odyssey: sliding door jolts/reopens when closing

2002 Honda Odyssey: Trouble closing driver-side power-sliding door. Door jolts repeatedly while closing and then reopens when it is nearly shut; while reopening, it sounds an alarm as though the door encountered an object in the way. We can close the door only by pushing forward on the door while it slides (or the door will reopen at the jolts) and then by pushing firmly in on the front edge of the door while it slips into the fully closed position. If we let up on the door before the door is fully secured, it will reopen. There does not appear to be anything in the door track, all the visible parts look normal, and we have tried lubricating the hinges with 'dry teflon' spray.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check the door when I get home. If it moves more than 1/8 inch, I'll request details on fixing the door. I used to do all my own car work when I owned a 1974 VW Bus, but mostly stopped with the newer, computer-controlled cars.

Please check the aft track roller assembly. It is easiest to inspect from the rear of the van looking forward when the door is open. You'll see the rear hinge assembly clearly. The track rollers cannot be seen but you can pull outboard on the rear edge of the door--the door should not move outboard more than 1/8 of an inch. If it moves out more than this or feels sloppy, suspect damaged/missing track rollers. This will cause the hinge to chatter in the track and "jolt". It will also cause the door to misalign during the close phase preventing the close motor from properly engaging.
Replacing this part is no easy task but doable if you are good with cars. Check back here for more details if you want to try it, otherwise get a competent mechanic or the Honda dealership to do it.

The problem is likely the middle rollers being worn. The way to check is to open the door and then look at the rear middle bracket (the one riding in the slot on the side of the body. If the metal of the bracket is touching the side panel, the rollers are worn and that's the cause. I haven't replaced mine yet, but it looks like removing the bolts holding the bracket to the door will let you swing the door out of the way to deal with the rollers.

I had a 2002 Odyssey with the same problem. I cleaned around the micro switch at the bottom rear of the door and checked the door roller bracket screws. The screws were loose so I tightened them and also sprayed the switch with electrical contact cleaner (special stuff that leaves no residue). Apparently this helped the contacts in the switch to close properly and the door was able to reset and work. Good luck.

The tracks may be clean but the rollers can get damaged. I found one door with a roller entirely missing. There are several rollers on each of three brackets; top, middle, and lower. For example, the middle bracket has two rollers which rotate axially in the horizontal direction to track the side of the rail---and a vertical roller to carry the weight of the door on the bottom of the track. If any of these rollers becomes chipped, cracked or simply are missing, you will get grinding noises and bucking problems. Use a strong flashlight and check ALL of the rollers for damage.

I read about this issue while I was looking for a fix to mine. Try the following:

Remove fuse #13 for 30 seconds or more from the passenger side fusebox. This will reset the door and the clock.

OR

1.) Disable the power door switch on the left dashboard.
2.) Remove the power door fuses located under the front passenger leg area.
3.) Manually open and close both sliding doors.
4.) Restore the power door fuses located under the front passenger leg area.
5.) Enable the power door switch on the left dashboard.
6.) Try opening the sliding doors.
