Question about 2005 Mercury Mountaineer

1 Answer

Rough engine on cold start. CEL blinked, now on all the time.

2005 Mercury Mtneer Premier. 4.6L V8. 45,000 miles, no problems. At
cold start, rough running, wants to quit. After several minutes at higher RPM in park, temp gauge starts to climb, and engine runs ok. But CEL
is on all the time. Went to Advance Auto store. They used Actron code
reader. Said some funny error message. They could not get it to work ok.
Another friend said that engine coolant temp sensor was bad.
Thanks for any help from anyone. Regards, Joe Y.

Take it to a different autoparts store and bring pen and paper. Write down codes. You can use search on browser and key in "Mercury code xxx" xxx means whatever number you are told by autoparts. Internet explorer will pull up code. Chances are the second autoparts store may be more knowledgable.

Your cold start circuit is not working and your friend may be right about coolant sensor. Also, the reader Advance used will not reprogram your car. It only reads problem so you have to change physical parts yourself.

Good Luck Joe

CEL blinking smoke coming from exhaust, rough idle

White smoke is indicative of burning coolant. Gray smoke is burning oil.

Have a compression test done which will often give an indication of evolving head gasket problems. If the coolant level is going down, and there's no obvious leak, its a head gasket.

Rough idle

This could be the O2 sensor or the MAF sensor. Try disconnecting the MAF sensor and if the idling seems normal, the MAF sensor is bad. Yet, it is always better to get the codes read if the CEL in blinking.
