No its not normal,there is a problem in the thermostat switch,its not operating at the right time,this must be change,

No! id say its the temperature sender unit as it activates the fan when coolant reaches a certain temperature replace it

Motor overheats if sitting still, a/c works while driving, but when I stop, it starts blowing hot air. Not sure if fan is coming on


open the hood, start the car and wait til it comes to normal temp. wait and see if the fan/s kick in. If they don't then there is a problem with the fan circuit or you have a bad fan. Turn on the a/c and see if the fan instantly turns on. if the fan does't turn on, then the fan may be faulty.

The electric fan that cools my radiator is not running.


The radiator fan should come on when car reaches normal operating temp,With engine at Idle and temp normal feel the top radiator Hose ,it should be hot,If no then Engine coolant is not moving-cause could be an "Air lock" if that is the case,turn key off until it cools then disconnect top Hose and start engine,at normal temp,you should have Engine Coolant coming out,turn key off let engine cool;reconnect and refill with a 50/50 mix;

Back to the Fan problem;the Fan should come on when engine temp is normal,if not turn the Air-Conditioner on,radiator Fan should come on at any temp;two checks ,one is the Fan Relay ,located in the under Hood main power supply box;There will be 3 or 4 relays for different systems since they are of the same part number swap and see if problem is fixed;if no check the Fuse in same power supply box;You said fans spin so they are not locked up;Take an eight dollar D.C. circuit tester,they look like an ice pick with a clamp for ground attach,to ground and with the fan plug disconnected see if you have voltage; ,You can have a continuous fan by finding a wire close to the fan that has power when the key is in the on position,take a wire and attach to that wire;

2004 GTP Grand Prix overheating in slow traffic cools down when on highway. What would cause this? Previously replaced was thermostat, water pump & both radiator hoses.


Are the cooling fans coming on during normal operation? If your ac works turn it on and see if it overheats with ac on.If it does not overheat the fans are not operating properly under normal operating conditions.The ac will force the fans on. What you can do to start is just let the car idle in park and see if fans will come on normally. The coolant temp should reach 200-210 before the fans will come on. Make sure the air is off at this time. If we can verify the fans are working or not working properly we can go to the next step. Let me know what you find out.

Fan doesn't run while in idle and begins to over heat until I start driving agin then it cools back down to normal. Also the fan runs when engine is off and drains the battery.


The fan is only supposed to come on when there is excess heat .. in normal driving conditions it doesn't start. When you start your car in the morning the fan won't come on because the engine is cold.

With a hot engine - and it depends how hot the engine is - the fan will only kick in to prevent overheating. In heavy slow moving traffic or a traffic jam, the fan will kick in if needed.

The air flow through the radiator is usually sufficient -in normal driving conditions - to cool the engine.

When you park up and the car has a hot engine, the fan will kick in. This is perfectly normal. It is caused by a surge of hot coolant triggering the fan sensor. Perfectly normal.

The fan then should cut out after a while .. maybe 2-3 minutes at the most. If the fan runs continuously that suggests a fault in the temperature sensor switch.

Next time - wait by the car and see how long it takes for the fan to quit after you have parked up. It should stop of its own accord after a couple of minutes.

If the fan cuts off after a short while, and your battery is becoming drained, that's probably a battery or alternator fault.

Remember: when you start the car the fan won't kick in at idle speed because the engine is COLD, and there is no reason for the fan to start up ..
The fan WILL kick in for a couple of minutes after you have parked the vehicle and the engine is hot

My Aveo starts up normally and slowly heats up to normal operating temp. But the cooling fan never turns on and eventually the temp guage climbs from the halfway mark to the top mark. I checked the fuses...


Most systems work this way: temp sensor on engine sends a signal to the computer which in turn sends signal to blower relay that then sends signal to the fan.
Any problem along the way, and the fan won't come on.

I would check to see if the cooling fans are coming on. The fans could be bad or you may have a blown fan fuse or fan relay.

hi this sounds like your radiator fan switch is u/s, you should be able to locate it on the radiator itself, either on left or right hand side, look for a large nut looking thing with 2 wires coming out and that will be what is needed...hope this helps

Check youre fan relay's and fuses. they may be bad or going bad. The fans are not continuous fans either they only come on when needed. But if the relay or fuse are bad it will not start.

do you know if the car has been rewired, because they weren't coming on at all? no it is not normal for an electric fan to be running from start to finish. they are usually temp. controlled to come on when needed. one fan usually comes on with your a/c and the other for cooling engine purposes.
